Hey guys I recently got an 2003 Saab 9-5 Linear with 109k miles on it.

It had a bunch of repairs done to it before I put it on the road with one being the fuel pump, so I don't think its that.

It was having troble starting last week occassionally and it would sound extremely rough to the point that it wasn't firing on all cyclinders at inital start up so I would just turn it off and then restart it and it would fire to life on all cyclinders. My garage thought it was the battery as it was over 3years and the car sat alot before it got to me. So they gave me a new one and problem went away.

Yesterday it struggled but then started right up on second key turn.

Went out to start it today and nothing but attempting to crank over with no sign of it firing. There are no CEL codes came up on my computer.

UPDATE: Just tried to start again and it made a sound like it wanted to crank over but didn't twice. still no start

Side note any good Saab mechanics on Cape Cod or South Coast of Massachusetts?

okay- so... Replacing the fuel pump almost always means broken hard lines if the mechanic is not a saab-er. Occasionally, people use non-submersible fuel line. Both of these usually end in a total failure, not intermittent.

Alternatively, if the check-valves fail, it can take 2 cranks to fire-up a 9-5. The first is really just priming the lines that would normally be full of gas, but aren't. This is common, too.

The misfire at start-up is fairly common. my car's done it occasionally for years.
It's just the ECU trying to sync the cranks sensor and Ignition cassette.
let it idle for 30-seconds, and it'll run fine. a blip of the throttle can fix it, too.

If it's getting worse, it may be the crank sensor. When it's not starting, keep an eye on the tach. it should bounce a little while cranking. If it's not, the ECU isn't getting a CPS signal.

Thanks for reply.

The shop that did all the work on it with the fuel pump are saab specialists. They have done all the work on my familys Volvo's and Saab's in the past. I trust them that they did the right thing when they replaced the fuel pump. I have spoken with them on the phone and from my diagnosis to them they believe it is the Direct Ignition cassette. The Tach does register alittle RPMs when cranking.

There is no starting of it at all currently and when it misfired on start blipping the throttle had no effect of correcting.

Unfortunately I moved away from family so I am in the process of hunting a shop to do the work or at least diagnose the issue.

I am waiting to see what the shop I dropped it off at just now believes the problem is.

Again thank you for the reply.

I have a 2002 9-5 Aero where all the fuel in the rail evacuates back into the tank over night. Takes quite a bit to start it in the AM. The check valves are less than a year old PPS. Kinda butthurt about it.
