This is a question for my friends 99 viggen, he just lost 2nd gear unless hes at a completely dead stop, at any real speeds he cant shift from 1st to 2nd or downshift from 3rd. He took it into the shop today and they quoted him about $1600 to put in a used one. I told him about Eriksson to rebuild his tranny but this is his daily driver so he cant have it laying around for a while, which is why he also cant change it himself unless I really convince him we could. Anyway, my questions are; does $1600 sound about right for all of this, and can he be sure that his tranny is totally busted? The shop he took it is near me and theyve tried to screw me over on several occasions with what seemed to be unreasonable items which needed to be fixed so I dont trust their opinion 100 percent, but they do good work. They quoted him $900 alone for a transmission which according to them came out of a 99 (assuming its a viggen) with 33k miles on it. They said it would be more expensive to rebuild his current tranny even though most of the labor is going to be in removal/installation. Basically what it comes down to is I have a feeling the shop is being a little inflated here, so what are his other options to get another tranny in there. And am I right in assuming that most 9-3 transmissions are the same, nothing special for the viggen?
