I need a new vacuum, the canister vac we have broke today and I hate it anyway.

Therein lies the problem. My wife likes canister vacs, I prefer uprights.

I think canister vacs are a pain in the ass, you have to drag them around, they get banged into furniture, walls and woodwork.

If just house cleaning & especially if you have animals Dyson is what I would do. Not the cheapest & also not the most expensive but it does a really good job sucking up just about everything.

Yes, house cleaning only. We're also getting a Siberian Husky puppy in May. I like the Dyson, but I'm not prepared to drop $400-$500 on a vacuum. I found a Bissell that is a lift off canister and upright in one unit at Sears for $200.

Also, we have hardwood or laminate flooring throughout our house. Other than a throw rug in Sarahs room, there is no carpet in my house.

I bought my wife a Dyson for Christmas last year, she likes it. It is a stout vacuum cleaner.

Prior to the Dyson she used the ElectroLux cansiter bullshit. That thing was overpriced crap. Canisters are needlessly bulky.

Prior to her, I was single and had a cleaning lady and no vacuum.

I'm more of a canister man, myself. They have tended to be more reliable and superior on more surfaces than the uprights I've had (especially on hardwood/laminate). Last year my wife and I splurged on a Miele canister. Best fucking vacuum I have ever had the pleasure to put my hands on. Granted they are not cheap, but I know several people that have 10-15 yr old Miele's that still work like new. Every single part is user serviceable.

This is what I'm finding out. All the reviews I've read say the almost the same thing. Uprights are great on carpet, but not so much on bare floors.

We had a Miele in Denmark, shame we couldn't bring it with us.

The other issue I'm having is finding a store that has what I want in stock!

This is whats at the top of the list, but again I can't find it in stock!

Vacuums, like most appliances these days, don't last as long as they used to. Appliance makers figured out that when they build stuff that lasts 40-50 years, they don't sell as many.

Yeah, I just read some reviews of it and the negative stuff is the stuff I need it for. Vacuuming under beds is a necessity with wood floors, thats where everything collects. For the most part the dog will be kept out of the kids rooms, but huskies shed enough for 2 dogs.

Another vote for Dyson upright. Got the DC25 Animal. Have had it for 4 years and it's still going strong with no issues. It does a great job at picking up all the cat hair around my apartment.

I Believe I paid $224 for it at Kohl's with some crazy coupons and such.

There are deals to be had, shop around.

canister vacs usually have the advantage due to a 2nd motor in the 'head', which in theory translates to prolonged sucking performance. for a house, though, its never a case where the machine loses power due to prolonged use. so canister is unnecessary.

ive tried a dyson vs this hoover and the hoover was easily the equal performer.

i'd save the extra money from the dyson.

I have a Miele upright that my parents handed down to me and don't see why people like them. Where the hose attaches at either end gets clogged with dog hair about once a month, which requires I disassemble the whole damn thing to fix.

So after a test run yesterday I'm pretty impressed with this things level of sucking. The handle/wand will lay flat against the floor, making getting under beds and couches very easy.

The "turbo" attachment is nice, it's operated by the suction power of the vacuum, the higher you set the suction speed, the faster the beater bar spins. At full power it kind of sounds like this:

The turbo attachment also has an access panel in it in case something gets stuck, you can remove it pretty easily.
