Coolant mixing with oil. Frothy? How is you coolant tank looking?

Sounds like a coolant/oil mixture which would be signs of a headgasket. Pics to confirm. You'll want to fix that fast if thats the case so that the coolant doesn't destroy the rod/main bearings (had that happen once in my 9000, ended up with a used motor).

 

what pictures do you need? There is this yellow glueish thing at the botton and when i pull to check the level, its on it again.
so what should i do now? Trip to a trusted saab shop or its an diy?

 

Probably the headgasket then. It comes down to your confidence level with a wrench. Headgasket is a lengthy job that would take your entire weekend if you've never done it. You also need to send the head to a machine shop to have it checked for warpage and decked if needed to "true" it.

 

i will go to a saab shop tomorrow for a thorough diagnosy and we'll see where we are.

 

Not at all uncommon this time of the year. It's probably just some condensation due to the cold weather and short trips.

I've never seen this on any of my SAABs. Its a good thing because I probably would have done the HG if I had!

 

it could be. i just drive this car once or twice a week and it was really cold recently. the longest recent trip i've done was like a 10-15 minute drive about two weeks ago.

what's the solution for that? change oil? drive more? lol

 

Just drive more to get the engine up to full temp. It will actually burn itself out of the oil after awile.

 

i was reading how people were noticing the head gasket going bad, but what differs is that my viggen is running perfectly fine, no issues and boosts up amazingly.

well, next saturday i will make the furthest trip i've ever done with this car, i will drive to east lyme and i will let those guys take a look on it.

My 96 900 has the same issue, however I'm pretty sure mine isn't just condensation. The coolant tank has looked a bit black lately :-(

 

mine looks as green as it looked once i got my water pump fixed.

 

Might just need a head bolts retorqued .... if they haven't been done before.

you can get ARP studs which can be re-torqued as much as you want, but the stock bolts "stretch" when then are torqued, so they can usually be re-torqued once or twice but then need to be replaced.

usually the condensation is from a pcv valve that isn't working properly... there is a check valve going to the pcv valve from the throttle body... when thats shot it'll push more moisture into the crank case creating the white/yellowish stuf to appear...

it's held there by vacuum lines and you can check by taking it off and blowing in both ends... you should only be able to blow threw one end... so if you can blow threw and feel air coming from either way its time to get a new one...

 

i have new silicon vacuum lines. i'm going to snap few pics, right now.

 

 

That is defanitelly condensation. We see it on just about all of the cars this time of the year. Don't worry about it, unless you feel the need to spend money. If the head gasket was bad or the bolts needed torquing the oil would be more like chocolate milk or the anti freeze would be like the chocolate milk too.

Interesting... Mine looked exactly the same about a week ago. Today I checked and it was nice dark brown.

The only thing that makes me thing headgasket is that I've got some gooey sludge on the inside of the top of the expansion tank. The coolant still looks clean (orange).

 

wow, that makes mine looks 10x better....


But I guess thats not that bad... makes me feel better though.
