Yeah, I spotted the wheels of a 03-05 Vector/Aero.

These Passat's did not sell well. So they are on ebay for $8-16k depending on mileage. But a 6mt wagon is RARE.

This is probably a LOT of car for the money. An A6 4.2 of the same year is likely a lot more money but this car probably has almost all the same content.

A W8 6MT wagon popped up locallty pretty recently.

Apparently they a dream to own. They have "7 series syndrome" as I like to say. That W8 is VERY expensive to mantian, the parts are staggeringly high priced. Worst yet, the cost of a motor failure is typically more than what the whole cars are going for used.

I see 2 of these at the Louisiana park and ride everyday. (One MT one AT, both driven by BIG women.)

Also at the U of MN I see a sedan version every now and then as well.

I would never buy a W8. The VW V6 motors are paint enough to work on. A W8 would be an extra specail nightmare! IIRC to have the O2 sensors replaced it requires taking the motor off it's mounts and hoisting it up to have clearance to service them.

I admire the W8 allmotion rides from afar.

Thats too bad.

It's never a good sign when an engine like that is only around for a short time and used in no other models. Was the W8 exclusive to the Passat? I can't remember if its truly unique or if its shared by any Audi.....I THINK it's unique to the Passat.

If it was just the 4.2L used in all the Audi/VW products it would have made it far more inexpensive to keep running and replace. I doubt it would have fit though.

when i worked within the brand, we had one (a w8) come in from auction with 20k on the clock, had no coolant, we filled it up, fired it up, and i shit you not, the coolant came spewing like a river out of all 4 exhaust tips, other than the motor being blown up to some extent, i have no further info. They were very nice to drive though, very torquey if i remember correctly.

There's a good reason the W8 didn't stick around long. Pretty much anything required pulling the engine. I can't recall what specifically was mentioned, but my buddy told me that at 80,000 miles or so, something was required on them to the tune of 5 figures out of pocket. Eff that.

It may be cheaper now, dunno for sure, but suffice to say that sub-stellar performance numbers and staggering repair costs killed that engine quick.

we had a passat wagon of this vintage, although a 1.8T

it was brand new and spent more time on the dealer lot for recalls and electrical and other failures then it did on the road. will not consider vw again. the dealer was horrible with service, customer service and price. just a horrible experience. the wagon was a stick, and that was the only good thing about it.

I had two recalls, blown speakers (replaced under warranty), and four ignition coils (replaced under warranty) over four years. Other than consumables and scheduled maintenance, I never spent a penny on the car. Loved the driving and ownership experience. I bought another Volkswagen (obviously) and will probably always have one in my stable.

Guess it goes to show you how one person's experience is statistically insignificant.
