Photos from today - tires, IC, wash

So, on the way to work this morning, I heard a thunk, and then felt my steering wheel shake a bit. Pulled over and saw I had a flat...less than half a miles from work. Crap.

I didn't want to drive on the flat, because it was REALLY flat, and it looked like the tire was possibly fixable.

One thing that has been in the back of my mind is that I knew my tires were iffy (little dry rot, weather checking, damn near bald), but I wanted to eek them out for as long as they were safe to drive on.

I popped the tire off the wheel and looked inside - I half expected to see a nail or something, but instead I saw this:

There was corrosion on the steel belt, so it had probably been slowly separating from the inside until the pressure finally got to one spot.

When I popped the rest off they were all starting to rot from the inside. Ick!

So, new Nokian NRVi tires, and a wash for good measure.

The new tires are lower profile, and they change the look of the car a bit, but I think I still like it. I've had NRVi tires before, and I loved 'em!

And a little peek at the IC sitting behind the bumper and the plate:

I might have to "go bookbinder" on that plate and move it off to the side or something :)

I'll have to check those tires out...
You'll have to drive up to Andrews then, because I sure as shit didn't keep 'em :)

Those tires were definitely not safe to drive on.

How old were they, anyway?
Not a clue, My guess is that maybe they were used, and had been sitting outside for a while....I just don't understand how they got that bad inside.

Either way, they were getting bald on the outside too

Sheesh!

I'd say you should consider yourself lucky that didn't blow out at a more inopportune time.

Car looks good!
Yeah, like on the "brisk drive" through winding country roads that I was supposed to take last weekend...

TD04 was put in quite a while ago, I made a thread or two about it.

It looks as though the belts are broken and have bee for some time....I am surprised that you didnt feel that in the steering or anything.
I know! It was on a front tire too...and I didn't get the slightest vibration until the tire started losing air. I'm glad I wasn't doing 90+ when it happened.

no grille = able to open the hood due to a 'missing' hood release clable

btw, those were some shady tires. glad to see that you have new ones on there now.
-corrected!

And yeah, I knew those tires were shot, they should have been replaced over a year ago  Oh well, I got my money's worth out of them :)
