Paint Type

I am doing some major research on paint work and have tried to find an answer to the paint type that is on my ng900 but cant find the answer.

Is the black paint on these cars clear coated? Im not sure if it is or not, there is some color transfer to the pad when polishing. It is not a strike through, which is what I thought first but the whole car is like that including the lower panels which were never polished until I did it.

Thanks for the advice!

Ok, thats good to know... The hood is a few years old since it was replaced, and there was no paint transfer but then again it was definately clear coated. Just wanted to double check, I must say that of all the paint types, enamel is definately the best in terms of gloss when corrected which makes me happy :)

Saab tended to use a variety of paints. Everything from single stage enamel, to a conventional 2 stage base/clear (urethane I assume), to water based 2 stage.

My black 9000 is mostly single stage, but at least one fender has clear on it.

Solid color paints, including black, weren't clear coated on the 900. Saab didn't clearcoat solids until early 1998. There's a TSB over on Townsend Imports' website if you're curious. I also had my black 900's hood repainted, and the bodyshop clearcoated it, too. It doesn't look any different than the rest of the car as far as shine goes. When I polish it with my Porter-Cable, no color comes off of the hood, but the pad turns black after doing the rest of the car.
