seriously... i think they are pricing it based on mileage.. $1 for each mile on the car. and then a $5k stupidity discount.

i mean really? a car that old with that few miles while it looks nice could scream problems. they need to be driven...

$30k? can't i buy a brand new Turbo X for that? or 3 viggen verts?

You all realize that it is a limited production collectors' car. 1987 was the FIRST official year of the convertible for Saab. Only a handful of convertibles were made in 1986....$30K for an 1986 900 Vert in that shape is actually kind of reasonable....

LOL...But nevermind You're all correct it's old, Old cars can NEVER be worth alot of money

Actually... I'm well aware of the rarity of this model. I'm also aware of the issues that come along with a first-year, limited production car. For someone who wants it for the novelty value of having the only flat-nosed 'vert, it's great. For someone who wants a car that they can take out and enjoy, save tons of money (both in initial purchase and upkeep, possibly) and buy a later c900 'vert.

I drive old cars. I love old cars. I sold my 9-3 and my LS400 so that I could go back to playing with old cars.

Rare doesn't mean good, and it doesn't always mean valuable.

Did anyone read the description? The price is high to attract interest, and then hopefully get you to sign up with a company called Proxibid to bid on the car at SOC.

Amazing factory origonal and perfectly preserved first editon Saab Convertible. Only 35,900 documented miles. Only 300 built and this is most likely the best one surviving. One owner, never driven in snow, always garaged, meticulously serviced. All service records since new, all books, tools, top boot. This Saab turbo has new brakes, new Michelin tires and new battery. Top, leather, dash, paint are excellently preserved. A joy to drive with air and cruise, lively performance from its turbocharged 16 valve four cylinder and 5 speed. This very collectable classic will be offered at Auction by Proxybid.com on August 14th at 8:00 pm Mountain Time at the Saab Owners Convention, Copper Mountain, Colorado. Register with Proxibid.com and be ready to own this beautiful classic touring car.

It's funny -- every ad says they are super rare, and they are certainly uncommon. But last I saw there were 3 on Saabnet at one time.

Also saw my first one in person Saturday night, parked southbound, top down, on PCH in Laguna Beach.

I missed that part, but I can say that placing an ad for $30k would detract me rather than interest me in participating in that auction

It's a crazy, "never going to see half of that asking price", kind of price, but I'm glad someone in the Saab community is doing it. If you think about it, the high price actually benefits other people who have classic 900's, convertibles, etc in the fact that it starts to push the upper limit/asking prices people who desire these classics will pay. You pay for quality, rareness, and condition for other cars, so why not with Saabs? Certainly this car doesn't warrant 30k, but classic Saabs in pristine shape with low mileage exist in very small populations relative to the amount originally produced. If you think about it deeply, within the total amount of Saabs produced during it's time period, there are probably no more than half of 1 percent remaining that are in as good of condition as this car. So maybe this guy gets half his asking price, but asking 30k helps us all in a way. It helps update where certain classic Saabs should be represented in terms of rarity and price in the minds of classic car buyers.

On a side note, I see it has a manual transmission. Weren't the vast majority of the 86 convertibles automatics?

There's some debate on how the trannies shake out, but that is along the lines of what I've heard. Although, I know the one in Connecticut is also manual. The other one I've met, I didn't check to see what transmission it had.

You know, I'm beginning to see the light on your way of thinking. Although, I really got no nibbles at all last year when I tried to sell my classic. Apparently, provenance only applies to the art and antiquities world, not Saabs. Y'all missed out on a bargain. I'm upping the price this year.

I agree the high asking price can do nothing but make our cars more valuable. I talked wth A guy who works at Sweeney's where the car is (I bought my NG900 that i'm selling from there and that's where i get work done that i can't handle... good guys.)

Anyways, I think he said, it was one of the first in the US, bought and shipped here, cause the guy had to have the first one. Original owner recently died and his wife sold it to them. I can guarantee the car was taken care of and is in "Mint" condition. Something that could be in the heritage collection i'm sure...

(they need to fix the SPG front panels on their car)

It'll be interesting to hear what happens to it.

I hate how the majority of the c900's for sale are convertibles. I have been searching for one and there are so many cheap turbo/SPG verts but very few nice 3 doors (sedans are even rarer).

Nice find poisonbeef, its really hard to like a car that you can barely see with the microscopic pictures that are posted. You would think for 6 grand they could afford more...

is that the white one? currently 2 down from the top i think? at first i was like, whoa, 900S, 129K, $8900, holy crack pipe. but then i saw the pics and decided to leave it be. the interior looks like the GM Heritage Car.

Fair enough. However, people will still pay weird money for c900s. The last one DeLo sold, a base 1987 8-valve with crank (!) windows, went for around $3k on eBay, I think. It was pretty damn clean. It also made Little Red look like the Space Shuttle, speed-wise. Guess the guy just really wanted a c900.

I was selling my 1982 900 with all work done, all things fixed, with 2.0L engine from 1990 900s and engine management. New AC compressor and hoses filled with real R-12. Plus many other good things on it.

I listed it at $1200 on craiglist and no one called and ad expired. I posted it then for $800 and after few weeks one guy called. I just decided to keep it little longer.

I don't get it. Running car for $800 and still no one? I searched craiglist for other 'cheap' cars and most of the running ones are above 1K, anything under 1K are non runing junk cars

Classic 900 has no value what so ever

Pretty small market for Saabs, new and old. Especially small in AZ, with no one looking for cheap FWD winter cars, etc. So you only have people looking for an ultra cheap, low maintenance car, and a 30 yo Swede is scary to most.

I would've bought it for $800!

A couple in Maine:

4)1991 SAAB 900 SPG Convertible (also pretty cool, maybe not ALL that high.)
Most of these were slushboxes. This one is one of the rare 5m's. Might be worth the $$$. I spent the bucks to convert when my slushbox went out a few years ago.
