Well, my Dad is on his honeymoon this week, and gave me his car to use while he is out. He then informed me he won't need it the week following, so I decided to take this opportunity to do some much needed work to my car. More specifically, rust removal and painting. Yes, I said painting. I am daring to try the $50 paint job (even though my total is closer to $100). My poor saab has seen the roughest of the Michigan Winters, and there is some rust that needs to be removed. I also wanted a change from the metallic silver I have. Don't get me wrong, I like the colour, however there are too many scratches and the clear coat is coming up. So, here we start.

Materials:

And for the Paint Choice:

I chose Royal Blue for my choice. I am hoping it wont be too bright. I may go out and buy some black primer to go underneath to hopefully darken it up a bit. What do you think?

Removal/Rust Removal Process:

I was first going to paint everything with it all on the car, but then as I starting removing things like the wheel covers and such, I could see some problems.

Everything Removed

As you can see, there was some rust starting to build up behind the fender. Also there were tons of leaves and crap, so I removed the fenders and sanded most of the surface rust out. I then sprayed with the rustoleum rust stopper and called it good.

I also saw that inside the doors was pretty bad too, so I sprayed in there too.

I think I will do the sanding and painting outside and off the car so I can get more coverage.

You are a brave soul to do the infamous '$50 paint job'. It will turn out well though, alot of people give it a bad rep but if you take your time and do it properly it will look great!

Be sure to update your registration (and title) if you're changing the color of the car. A buddy of mine in high-school did a $50 paint job on his old '64 Chevy convertible. Changed it from white to red. (came out like shit BTW--good luck with that). He was pulled over for some minor traffic infraction and they impounded his car because the reg showed a different color.

Well, I did some more work yesterday. I might be able to get out later today, but I have class and helping someone install something in their Civic, so it would be a bit later. Anyway, I keep finding rusty spots on my car, so I am doing a lot of grinding and spraying.

I guess a lot of the surprise was how I found rust behind the weather stripping by the roof rack mounts, and on the bottoms of the door jams under those plastic things (that I broke to get off). I am going to need to do a bit of bondo-ing for some of the holes in the bottoms of my door. I can't figure out how to remove the wiring harness from the back doors so I can take them off. On the fronts I just had to removed the little red plastic clip. On the rears, it doesn't look like that. I also can't get the rear wheel arch piece to come off. The fronts, they were lined with 8mm bolts all the way around, however in the back it feels like there are little, clips maybe? Does anyone know what I am talking about? I'll look in the Haynes Manual a little later to see what it says.

I do have some good news though!

I got the hood primed! I sanded that bad boy down and put on the first coat. It didn't take too long to dry, and it looks great! I obviously need to fill a few more holes and smooth it out, and I am betting it will look wonderful after a second coat. I am really hoping it turns out well.

ive seen a few 50 dollar paint jobs that looked good.... Lots of wetsanding, like enough to make you wish you just spent the money on a real paintjob, but if you keep at it it could look really good...

I always wanted to try a hammered finish rustoleum paintjob on something! you couldnt see any runs with that shit right?

Yeah, I am starting to dread the wetsanding. I have also decided to change my colour of choice over to black. Ideally, I would like to have a midnight blue, but I can't find it for the life of me. I am afraid the royal blue is going to be too bright. So, I am changing.

Day Four

Well, it is now day four of work. I took two days off, one because of rain and one because I was busy watching the Wings and hanging out by the pool.

I decided I couldn't wait anymore so I started to paint a few select pieces of my car to see how it would turn out. I painted the hood first.

As you can see, I am getting orange peel. When I was rolling on the paint, I was getting thousands of bubbles. Most of them popped, but some stayed. I am hoping the wet sanding will get rid of the orange peel. I am thinking I should go a tad thicker on the paint, but we'll see.

I then had the brilliant thought of bringing the fenders and doors inside to my basement, so I could paint them whenever I wanted.

Image

My paint mixture was way too thin which made thousands of bubbles that didn't pop. One fender came out alright while the other came out horrible. So, I thickened up the mixture and went over it a second time, and that helped a little. I was under the impression that I need to go really thin, but I don't think I need to. I can keep it a little thicker and be alright. Maybe I just have bad brushes, that's why I am getting all the bubbles. I don't know.

I also did the quarter panel and roof!

I haven't done all of the quarter panels yet due to one side still needing a little more bondo, and the lower half needing something, but I can't remember. So far, not bad. I am stopping for the day because I am in one of those "i am failing at everything" moods so I am going to relax, and check back tonight and see how it dried. I also need to go out and get some new paint trays and a big can for mixing.

It's about 2.30am here, and I just went out and checked the painting on the car. The coat looked dry, so I did another coat. I am seriously reconsidering the primer on the rest of the car. The hood looked so much better than the roof and the rest of the car. I am going to wetsand tomorrow with 400 grit and finish the rest of the body work, and then do an all around coat. I am afraid that since I am doing the fenders and rest of the doors separate, they are going to come out looking different shades. I may put the fenders back on tomorrow and then do the doors separate, but we'll see.
