do you want to pull just the tranny, or the tranny & motor combination.

My opinion, is that its easier to pull both, out the top.

 

dont want to pull the motor, just the tranny, i figured from the bottom.

 

put a support bar across the top between the fenders to hold the motor & tranny in place, unbolt the subframe portion under the transmission, unbolt the tranny, remove the drivers side CV shaft, remove the shifter linkage & drop it out the bottom.

Its pretty damn straight forward, really.

 

nice, I was looking at it and it looks a hell of a lot easier then my classic 900 trannys.

 

only real bitch is lowering it, then raising it back into position, such that all the bolt holes / dowel pins line up. THAT's where I get in trouble, and that's why I pull the whole assembly out the top, split it on the floor of the garage, reassemble, and reinstall.

 

Agreed. I haven't done this on a Saab, but with my other vehicles, I've had to resort to taking out the engine just to get the two to mate back together. Its a nightmare. I now always take the engine/trans out/in together.

 

why would you pull the tranny out the top? Much easier to pull it out via wheel well. have someone help you pull it and put it back in

thanks guys, looks like this is happening soon. ill let you know how it goes. I sold my old Jeep Cherokee today for $500.00, so there is my stage 2 Spec clutch!!!!!

 

this is a funny job. especially when you finish at two o clock in the night, in a workshop you've never been before, and you've never bled a clutch before.

 

me and a buddy whilst drinking and plain old dicking around pulled the motor and trans out the top in a few hours.... swinging the subframe down is quite a job seeing as you have to unhook the steering rack AND the motor mounts and pull it forward to get it out. may or may not go out the wheel well, never tried it... plus if you pull the motor out you can do some general maintenance to it while your at it.... front, rear main seals, head gasket etc....

 

No way you have to undo all that stuff to pull the gearbox from below. Half of the subframe swings down (or is removed in my case) for that very reason.

 

Just do it however you please, and post back when you're done. Let us know how it went, whichever route you take.

 

Will do, i do not want to pull the entire motor, no need. I will pull the flywheel and have it resurfaced, and do the seal behind it. I will be starting to take it apart tonight in the shop, last night i soaked all the bolts with PB Blaster.

94CDE is right, in that 2 of the bolts that hold the subframe pass through the rack, but they only have to be removed. The rack doesn't get touched other than that.

 

started at 5, just finished taking the clutch off. got annoyed a few times but it came off with nothing breaking. I was stupid though and did not label some bolts, im sure ill figure it out. gonna take the flywheel off and get it resurfaced, looks good, no cracks or hot spots. clutch looks good too actually, but still gonna replace it. overall, not a bad job.

 

so after 7 weeks of waiting on parts i finally got the tranny back in the car tonight, went well, few little snags. Im messed up big time though and hooked up the clutch line and the bleeder to the wrong holes......thats gonna be a fun project to deal with in the tiny opening. just gonna get some alxe grease tomorrow and flush the tranny. i ended up going for a used tranny, 80k ish for 400 bucks.
