GS Tranny Mount Review

I installed the GS Sports Transmission Mount today to replace my stock mount (which was way worse than I thought). My first impression when I took it out of the box was "This thing is beefy!"

All the welds were 100% quality; evenly done and all complete, couldn't be better. The silver effect powdercoating looked beautiful as well, although it chips very easily so that is my one word of caution on this piece. The quality of the poly was great with no bubbles and was a very dark (almost black) blue. Lastly, the mounting point for the transmission is a beautiful machined cylindrical metal piece that adds to the appearance of quality engineeering.

I bought a hydraulic floor jack to support the transmission which worked well. I had a very hard time cracking the horizontal transmission bolts since Saab did a good job with the loctite. Removing the stock piece was easy, and revealed damage that was much worse than I thought.

Comparing the GS mount to the stocker is a joke. Looking at the GS product made me think that this is best described as "This should have been on the car out of the factory" which seems to be a common theme whenever I deal with Genuinesaab. :)

I installed the new mount, making sure the four bolts had some blue loctite on the threads before fitting. I loosely bolted in the mount to the frame, and used the jack to line the holes up for the transmission bolts. I tightened those up and then tightened the vertical bolts and released the jack. I then torqued down on the bolts, both before I started the car up and after to make sure.

Final Verdict:

In park or in neutral, it felt the same. However once the engine was put into gear, there was a significant increase in vibrations. These would vanish as soon as the car was moving and felt stock regardless of the speed. In fact, it felt smoother on throttle than before while giving me a feeling that the transmission was much more solidly connected to the chassis. I personally like the added sensation with this mount since even thought the vibrations increased, they were 'solid vibrations' and made me feel more connected. Anyways, sorry for the long review but most reviews I read were specific to manual transmission cars so I figured I would add a decent review for those automatic owners. The car rips (APC gauge was creeping past red during my quick stint on the Merritt) and feels the best I have ever felt it, so thanks to the GS crew for adding to my driving experience yet again!

One quick question: do the vibrations reduce somewhat as the mount gets bedded in over time?

That design change is probably the difference between the manual and automatic variants. My best guess is that it helps lower the amount of vibration it adds with the automatic transmission.

Those are great. The stock mount in my Vig was toast like yours, so I couldn't compare to an intact mount, but damn it cleaned up the shifting nicely.
I can't directly comment on the physical shifting with the automatic tranny, but acceleration feels so much more solid and takeoffs and kickdowns feel much more solid and punchy. It used to feel like the car would wind up before it would take off from a stop or kickdown past the regular turbo lag.

Excellent write-up. I just got a GS Auto Mount in spite I just recently put in a Trans mount. I had to get it as it was a barely used mount and cheap due to the person not liking the vibration from it. I can live with a stronger grip on the trans over any kind of little vibrations shifting gears...that's normal to me anyways:))

Do you have the torque specifics on the mount as I know these are supposed to be torqued a bit different than OEM. I want to be sure I don't over-torque when I put mine in.

If you don't want to keep sweat'in your pulley disintegrating at the worst moment. Corrects an OEM deficiency, just like the GS trans mount.
Um sure but the mounts at least give a perceivable effect on at least something other than engine maintenance.

The regular pulleys are 60k items, that's at least 3 years for 95% of the people on the board.

happened to me the other weel ... stranded at the other end of town at midnight .... had to park it at a gas station and go to canadian tire to pick up a new short belt(50$) and luckily i had a spare pulley ... cuz i ordered one in and it just came in this morning :S ... wishing i knew about the wazee pulley now lol i woulda bought that .... same eff'ing price lol

The two that connect the transmission to the mount (horizontal bolts) should be torqued to around 30ft-lbs, while the bracket bolts need about 50ft-lbs. The key to those is using some blue or red loctite so they don't loosen up on you.

Fortunately at the rate I'm going, It will take me another 13 years for the mileage to hit 60k miles haha but I will keep this in mind.

Auto mount has been like that for a long time. It does not look like the manual mount. The grooves soften the vibrations. They usually take a week or so to break-in
Thanks Nick, I knew I saw a mention of the mount breaking in when I did some research and read some threads on here. Great product though!

I wonder why there isn't any mention of light weight pulleys (retain stock sizes even) for our engines, is there some kind of downside to those upgrades on these cars?

Mmm the stock one is pretty lightweight as it is. Under half a pound? I doubt you'd be pressed to gain anything by shaving an ounce off of that.

The heaviest part of it is the bearing, the outside is just plastic.

Thanks Champ, I thought there was probably a good reason they aren't available.

I apologize for this, I probably seem like I have little mechanical ability (I'm learning) but I just want to make sure this looks right. I readjusted the bracket so that it is better aligned and flush with the edge of the poly section. Does this look ok?

(Everything is torqued down and have loctite applied.)

You think your tranny mount is bad... My center part of the mount was completely separated from the 3 other triangle pieces... I still have it-I should snag a pic to show you what real destruction looks like.

I took a good look at mine and only half of the last remaining rubber portion was still attached haha, I would give it maybe another few drives before it completely disintegrated. I'm soo happy I replaced it.

You are making it way too hard. ;) Yes its in right. :)
Haha, I'm always a bit paranoid when I do stuff as I really don't want to mess up. I'm learning though, I didn't have any mechanical ability until I started working on this car to learn about it better. Alot of the time I know that it is fine, but I need to stop second guessing myself haha. Thanks for the comfirmation!

thanks nick i spent like 30 min on the phone with him the other night trying to convince him he did it right.
So you think that looks right? I'm not sure man, I'm really nervous thats not how its supposed to be... Can you drive down and take a look at it for me?* ;)

Hey Christian! I don't mean to be a noob, but I was wondering if you know if the mount for the manual trans that GenuineSaab sell are still the cool blue color for both the engine side and the transmission side? I ask because I wouldn't want to order one and on the GenuineSaab site there be the color of the blue one and then all of a sudden get a black one, you know what I mean? Sort of like a false advertisement...

I tried PMing that Nick guy and he's not responding. I guess he doesn't check his PMs...

Thanks and please let me know if you do.

I am not sure, but you can be assured that it does not affect the performance. Color is just for aesthetics, and this part is completely hidden so I wouldn't see the issue. Also, I prefer the color I got anyway since the light blue looks a bit gaudy in my opinion.
