General Megasquirt Advice?

So, rather than threadjack JK's MS 8v thread, I'll start my own...

Holy crap, I just checked out that Megasquirt site [that was linked to in JK's thread... www.msefi.com], and now am reading the manual/faq about it. I had no idea about this kind of system. I heard about megasquirt, but never knew what it was.

So if my understanding is right about MS, I could literally program my own ECU/Injection setup for my SPG? That would totally be a massive (but fun) project. Would that solve my problem with the LH2.2 vs 2.4 setup and allow me to have a crazy mad BOV and more customization to the engine?

Since the SPG is my project car, and my 2nd set of wheels, having the car sit in an un-driveable state while I tinker with the engine doesn't bother me as much as it would if it were my only car.

What would the benefits of going with a MS system be for me and my 16v SPG? For those who have done it, was it worth it? I mean, I have a good idea of what I want the SPG to become when it's all said and done, and if this MS system will let me get there, and since it's a true DIY, it will be a great learning experience for me.

I guess, what I'm looking for is for a "Go for it!" or "You're wasting your time".

Anyhow, back to the maual, I got a crap-ton of reading to do about all this.

definitely go for it, when I have enough fundage for a 2nd car its the way Im gonna go. by then the car will be 20 years old and have zero resale so I can do what ever I please with it:lol: same goes for the bosch LH system too

there is plenty of potential for making plenty of power using MS on your SPG. Just look at DeLorean's non-runng SPG...non-running because he can't keep the transmission togeather with the power that he is making. Even with the stock T3 turbo you can make more than enough power.

I say do it if you have the money. It will be far easier to fit MS to your car as-is than it will be to fit to any of my current vehicles (which is why I am left at "toying with the idea").

So...DO IT!

the apc system is garbage. the thing about MS is you can set your fuel to sense your boost pressure so a boost controller works way better. APC will still work but its a pussy ass system in the first place. you can make MS do the stuff APC does but i think a manual approach is best. with a MBC+A you will get full boost at less than 3 grand that can hold to the redline (within reason because your still on a stock turbo) and MS can fuel and ignite it perfectly.

well, you sure act like you know everything

the APC is a fine system, its a pain to tweak though, what i plan on doing is keeping it for knock detection purposes. to put it simply, you can plug pin 19 of the APC into the MS box, and it can tell when there is knock, and Ms will then back the boost off, and the timing if needed, until the knock stops, much like Trionic does. as of now, MS isnt able to reliably detect knock on its own, so you would loose a large safety margin by totally trashing the APC.

I would go for it!! I chose Autronic SMC for my engine management system & it transforms the way the car/motor feels. Off boost response is like a new saab due to how timing & all that stuff can be adjusted.

This is what I did

Autronic SMC
MSD DIS-2
Tial ext wg set to 21.3 PSI
Turbosmart megasonic BOV

Not sure why you would want a MBC?

I trashed the APC system, not needed

yeah knocksense is nice, except theres allready a perfectly good knock detection routine in the APC, i agree that its a pain to tune, thats why im gonna let the MS do that, id rather not buy extra stuff that i dont need. and yeah yeah, no need for knock detection, unless you drive your car on the street and end up with a crap tank of gas, or wanna just throw some 87 in there for a short trip, can do that just fine if you have knock detection, cant if you just have a "properly tuned car"

there is no way I would ever think of putting lower octane gas in my car, that would just be stupid!! I am just speaking for myself, other people might be fine but definantly not me!

I would think as long as I stay out of full boost lower octane could be run but for the few pennies a gallon I will not try it

If you want to run cheap gas all the time tune the car for the cheap stuff :)

well the APC along with my megasquirt works wonderfuly... the MS's boost control is neat and has more features... I would not mind trying it, but the saabs APC system works just fine too, especially when moded.

I can't wait to get a working trans in my 900. driving this 9-5 saab gets old fast...
