Gas Mileage with Ethanol

Hi,

I'm trying to find out if my fuel mileage decrease is due to the gasoline changes in this past year or perhaps some other cause. I didn't find anything T7 specific so I wanted to see what the other 9-3 owners are experiencing.

It seems since the ethanol blend replaced MTBE that I'm getting much worse gas mileage, around 2 mpg less on the highway and around 4 mpg worse overall. This is a blend of about 25% city and 75% highway but only about 8 miles round trip.

This is with 93 octane gasoline.

I know that ethanol has less specific energy than MTBE but I was looking for real world decreases measured by the most picky drivers, and the LINK is where we are.

Thanks for any numbers you can offer.

I didn't have my car very long before the switch occured to the 10% ethanol mix up here. With MTBE in the gas I was averaging 29-30 mpg combined highway and city per tank (~400 miles) for about 3 tanks. Then ethanol came and now I get no more than 28 mpg combined per tank, so maybe it has had some effect on my mileage. It's nothing conclusive because the numbers are so close. Also, if there are weeks where I dig into the turbo more, my mileage suffers so it's not really anything to draw conclusions by.

The worst I've seen on ethanol mix is 21 mpg, but that was when I floored it everywhere. The best is 28 mpg over long trips.

All of this was with 93 octane.

well 29/28 is 3.57 percent... I got my 9k just as the pumps was being switched over. And in my c900 the odometer didn't work. My dad claims his mileage has dropped since ethanol replaced mtbe as well.. but then I found out today that his alignment is off, cupping the rear tires.

all math aside...when I ran E85 in my old Ranger, I got roughly 2 mpg less on average. maybe 1.5mpg. But it did top out at a staggering 108mph instead of the paltry 107mph the regular 87 got me.

The only time I've ever run not oxygenated in my car I got better mileage...32 instead of 30, but I probably had a lower average speed or something...hardly scientific.

wow quinn, im impressed.

Your right foot is probably the problem so unless you take a mechanic out for a drive i dont think the dealer will have much to say about it ;) I think the lowest i got at one point in my 9000 Aero was 18MPG.... thats when i slowed down a bit

Mom's CSE got around 30, and the cars are really similar. Her car also didn't boost as high on the guage as it should, and mike leonard said its because of her driving style, affecting the computer.
yep i believe it... thats why i have to drive fast all of the time... So my computers used to pnwing ricers... see like zingzach said a long time ago, i solve everything by driving faster.

The whole ethanol thing enthralls me. I have toyed with the idea of burning straight alky but don't know enough about the fuel maps to jump off that bridge. Ethanol is actually a lot cleaner burning and is higher octane that gas. However the air/fuel ratio needs to be different higher air lower fuel than gas. And finally for all you boost junkies, alcohol lowers combustion temperatures while releasing more energy than gas. Lower combustion temps= higher boost without piston holes! Somebody swap injectors, fpr, and kick the boost up while running straight alcohol and let me know if it works or my theory is all washed up.
