Study automotive design, and design theory where you hear the inside story of the past 40 years of car design...I can tell you countless stories of how turds were created like the Aztek and Cimmeron.

I had Cole/Cpenning ride in my last $600 Beater-etta and he was quite impressed with it. It did nice burnouts too lol.

All I know is that I am thankful for not having to see those cars on a regular basis lol. It doesn't always take technical knowledge in design theory to tell when a car is ugly haha. I agree that the Aztek is a poster child, but I think that PT Cruisers are horrible as well with an honorable mention for the Pacer.

When you learn of the background story and hear things first hand, you understand HOW they became so ugly. My first studio class, the guy teaching worked on the Aztek from day one, another teacher worked on the oval'y Taurus. Made for good stories.

Bruce, I am sorry, but there are opinions, and then there is just being wrong.

Why would you compare the V-8 used in Mustangs to the FWD compact's V-6 from GM? The counter to the 5.0 was the TPI which was both 5.0 matching 225 depending on year as well as the 5.7.

The Z-24 had the same engines as the Beretta minus the Quad4. It was about 100-120 lbs lighter but had less features and body panels were not double galvanized and so they were far more prone to rust.

quad 4 was an ok engine, pretty torquey. nvh was ridiculous tho. but if you check out how superior the honda and toyota engines of the day were, the quad was lackuster.

the gtz looked great. i'll give you that.

best app of the quad4 turned out to be the fiero. that package was a winner. and i'd gladly have one. with a glue gun to keep it from falling apart.

you know, pontiac designed the fiero to pulverize automatically at 85 months from date of manufacture.
The Quad 4 in 1990 made 180hp and 160tq, in W41 guise with were more aggressive cams and chip for the Olds, it made 190hp. HONDA was no where near there for years. I don't think it was until 1996 that the Prelude Si V-tec made 190hp, and yes thats when Honda engines were far superior. The Quad4 WAS NEVER OFFERED IN THE FIERO.

For 1990 the GTZ was a pretty badass offering. It also had some very good handling numbers. Today people are still running 15.6's in the 1/4 with bone stock high mileage cars and pulling .90+ g's on the skidpad with todays better tires.

Find me how many 20 year old FWD cars that are that competitive with those figures.

You must compares apples to apples.

You know, and I'm being completely serious here, after watching this video I think a 1990 Beretta is a lot nicer looking than many cars that are available today. Sure, kind of bland, but it's not ugly.

And those HVAC knobs look like the ones from a Saab 99.
The 1990 was the last year of that interior, it was very dated. 91-96's had the up date.

the other day, i just found the "Indy" logos for our old indy beretta (the yellow one). They're still in the cellophane, perfect - Jameson, know anyone who might be interested in buying them? They're the big ones that would've went on the doors.

*edit* wait a second - that shoulder-padded wonder just explained tire size, and now I actually understand it. Visuals, ftw.
Those decals can be worth some decent money.

We had an '88 Z-24 as a get to Newark car for my Dad. It was a lot of fun before it was stolen. It just felt even cheaper than my Beretta and since it was only 100lbs lighter, I was happier with an L-body.

The nice feature to me, is they can take on a LOT of bolt in or near bolt in engine swaps. It's hard to knock a 2600-2800lb car with a Getrag 5spd, buying it for $1000 or less, putting in a 3.4L for $250, then turbo'ing it and running 12's, all while handling well with Koni/Eibachs and good tires.

Just a note, my first one was measured at over .98-1.01g's with my engineering friends test equipment when we put it on the track. When I drove his two months ago with C5 Vette brakes, it confirmed it, it was the flatest cornering FWD car I had ever been in.

1.0g on street tires is not easy. This was one of the things that led me to selling the Viggen.

Again, we are talking about old, shitty GM cars here, but ones that are cheap with a shitload of potential.

It's not magazine or encyclopedia knowledge, I got my bearings working and tuning cars with GM FWD.

TRUST me, late 80's and early 90's Honda and Toyota 4's did not make big power. They had better NVH than the quad for sure.

I think the highest output Honda 4 in 1990 might have had 145hp tops, same with Toyota. 190hp/160tq and revving to 7k in the Quad was impressive back then. The joke was, the GTZ was advertised as an E30 M3 with money back, I know it's funny, but its 4 cylinder matched many of the figures of the M3 at the time.

I didnt like the quad, too many head gasket issues, and not as reliable as the 60 degree V-6.

But it was impressive for it's day. Don't get it mixed up, the Celica 180hp mill, or when Honda made 100hp per liter 4's, we are talking 5-10 years AFTER the Quad 4 was introduced.
