I'm a devout formula 1 fan as most of you know. The pinnacle of auto racing.
900hp and <2000lb plus all the. Latest driver aids and huge tires.

But nascar is 700hp, no driver aids, and regularish size tires.

Today they were showing nascar on a road course. And it was. Impressive.

Who's the better driver? Milisecond accuracy and unreal consistency of an f1 pilot?
Or the balls to dominate and guide a pig at unreal speeds?

Perhaps that most determined group of drivers that compete in the Indy 500 and CocaCola 600 on the same day each year are best qualified to answer your question. It might be interesting to see if any of them have chronicled their day in an article.

So do NASCAR cars.

F1 drivers seem to have better reaction times, but manhandling a 3000lb+, ill handling car isn't a walk in the park either. I did a ride along at the KY speedway a few years ago. There are no words to describe how it feels to be headed into a turn at 180mph, then feel the driver dive to the bottom of the track for the turn. The whole time centrifugal force is doing it's best to pull the car up to the wall at the top of the turn, which looks like it's 4 stories high.

I remember Dr. Jerry Punch(yes, he is really an MD)doing medical exam on Ricky Rudd after a summer race in Martinsville. Rudd gave his victory lane speech from the prone position.

Who is better? Tough question. Montoya took to Jeff Gordons car much faster than Jeff took to Montoyas Williams F1 car. Plus Montoya usually is pretty competitive, running near the front in most races. He had the Brickyard won last year, except for his pit road speeding violation.

But Montoya is an anomaly. He wins in everything he races. CART champion, Indy 500 champion, 8 time F1 GP winner(I think Monaco was one)and he's won a NASCAR road race.

Love F1, love WRC.

You should check out Australian V8 Supercar racing.

And though I know there is no doubt about the talent in the series,

I

Still

Hate

Nascar.

Australian V8 Supercar is great! I think the best part about that and WRC and all of the various touring car series is that they really do start with everyday cars. Sure, the WRC C5 is in a completely different class from a showroom C5, but it started off as a showroom C5. There's a real connection between the race car and the road car. None of this Nascar everyone has the same chassis, but some guys have Toyota stickers and others have Ford stickers.

I may be totally out of line, but I look at it like this:

F1 - 75% skillz / 25% juevos
WRC - 50% skillz / 50% juevos
NASCAR - 25% skillz / 75% juevos

So the most skillful drivers might be in F1, while the ballsy dudes are in NASCAR, with WRC being a mix of the talented and insane.
