yeah, doesent look like a GFE. My understandingis that the GFE is an AERO in every way but the turbo. It still has a GT17 and LPT software.

As for T5 vs T7, here is the basics:

T5 = MAP (manifold absolute pressure)
T7 = MAF (mass air flow)

T7 measures the air mass going into the engine, while T5 just meaures the pressure, and calculates the airmass based on the temperature reading. T7 is more advanced, used to be harder to tune, but now that is changing as T7 suite gets more steam.

 

Definitely not a Fisher wagon, just a run of the mill base wagon. It'll have a GT-17 and software to match it. Did you get any kind of service history with it?

 

Yeah it has a one owner history same person leased then bought it, good service records, regular mantainance & clean history.

When you say it has a GT-17 I guessing you mean the type of turbo but I have no knowledge of what that means, what size or boost output it is? & software to go with that peculiar turbo?, is it easy to work with or is it a troublesome system?
Last turbo I had was a 85 900 about 10 years ago; Gas, spark, & boost, is all it had, not all this electronic mess.

 

Well in short, the GT-17 is junk. They wear out pretty regularly, and people on here like to take that opportunity to upgrade to the TD-04 which is a Mitsubishi turbo found on Aeros, Viggens and H.O.T. models.

 

I have a 1999 9-5...is the turbo easy to swap out for the TD04?
I know I have a GT-17, but now I'm thinking I should upgrade!

Just wondering if there are a bunch of other parts I would need to buy replace to accomodate this new turbo?

 

are the a/c seats any good or can you really not tell its working?

 

You can definitely hear them work, that's for certain. Tboy was nice enough to let me experience his. Born from jets, indeed.

The GT-17 is a smaller turbo than the TD-04, it spools faster but has less top end than the TD-04. And it is not as reliable as the TD-04.

 

The ventilated seats do work. I have had several passengers in my car and I turn them on without saying anything and they always notice. They are also LOUD. The make a dull roar especially when both are on. I've also had a passenger comment on how loud my car was and I explained its the seats!

They do seem to work best on a humid day when you are slightly sweaty. I don't believe they PUSH air at all. I think it is the sucking of air that is happening. I've never been able to feel air exuding from the pores of the seat. I only feel it when I sit down.

 

My moms '00 9-5 had 156k or so on what we can only assume is the original turbo. It's given off a puff of smoke on startup for the last 20k lol. Buut she traded it in on Friday so whatever :lol:

But otherwise can someone give any more information about 9-5 turbo systems & the electronics that run them?
Gt17’s junk? What is there life expectancy; they did just put a new one in the car before I bought it. Then of course what would a smart replacement to upgrade to a better turbo or to increase proformance?
What of the manual transmissions are they made of fragilinum or can they take a beating?
What other things should I be cautious of, things that are prone to brake down more then others, what to have upgraded or what to look for, what to carry with me on my daily drives & long distance drives.
What have you guys learned about YOUR 9-5s’ ?

Weak points on the 9-5 --

1. oil sludge. Change that oil, use high quality synthetic. Make sure you've updated the PCV system to update #6, which helps considerably. (Does not apply to MY '04+, all fixed by then).

2. Direct Ignition Cassette. Some of us carry a spare. They've updated the DI cassettes and the software, so this is not as common as before. It is perhaps worth your time to check in with a dealer and see if your DI Cassette or software have been updated.

3. Rear shocks. Replaced mine at 85k on my 2000 9-5 Aero.

4. Crank Position Sensor. Easy fix. Hot start issues are a primary symptom.

5. SID - display unit in the cockpit. Not a mission critical fix, just depends on whether missing pixels bother you, and how many.


The manual transmissions are quite robust. The only real issue seems to be some wear in 2nd gear. I have an LSD put into my 9-5 Aero, and I replaced 2nd gear at the time based on the way it looked, but I did not notice any symptoms before that. This was on a 118k mile, adult-driven car.

 

i have 123XXX on my gt17 and it still runs like a champ. i have test drove others with gt17s at 150XXX and the turbos seemed just fine.

 

Regarding the sludge issue, often a sludged engine's turbo will fail before the engine shows signs of failure. The lines to/from the turbo will clog or become restricted then the turbo will starve for oil. Sometimes I wonder if it is this that gives the GT17 turbo a bad rep. ANyway, you want to make sure that your motor is as sludge free as it can be. Look on Genuniesaab.com for the pvc update kit. You can tell the kit by an additional oil breather nipple mounted on the oil fill receptacle (the part you screw the oil cap onto).

 

I saw that car - did not drive it - asking price was way too much. Car was beat overall - true highway car from the wear and tear. Possible deal for under $4000 - It was on craiglist for $4700 originally. It since had "brake problems" which cost him too much and they seem to think that makes the car worth more if they spent too much to fix it. Just be careful, do not buy the first one you see - there are PLENY 9-5 wagons to look at for sale if you are willing to go hunting at some distances.

 

so can a sedan be a gary fisher, as i got my insurance card back from geico and they have the model listed as 2000 saab 9-5/fisher...

it has heated and ventilated seats, rear heated seats, woodgrain steering wheel and shift knob...

i thought only wagons were fishers, unless you could get a gary fisher option pakage on sedans

it also has the harman kardon system

 

If it has the wood grain, HK etc and isn't an Aero than that sounds like a GF to me... Though, like you, I haven't heard of a GF sedan.

 

GF is wagon-only. that wagon posted has a lpt lip on it, not the aero lip. it's just a regular lpt. no big whoop.

...and I'm like 90% sure that the ventilated seats didn't come out until '02, though...

100% sure that my 2000 sedan has ventilated seats.... rear heated seats front heated seats, wood grain/leather wheel its got more options then i normally see on 2000 sedans

 

my 1999 LPT has ventilated seats too.

But it does not have heated seats
