There are a couple of these tunes available on ECU project and from different tuners,. what are your thoughts on flex fuel? is it bad to run in these cars? what is the longevity like?

Are there any downfalls to running this?

My thoughts.

I still don't think I'll be running E85 all that frequently unless I know I'm doing city driving where mpg is the suck anyhow.

Haven't run it long-term, so I can't help you there. Also, I experienced no cool weather adverse effects with E85 in the tank.

Also, check in with abdukted. He's had his tune much longer. Moonracer, I think, knows some Iowa folks who have been using it longer.

how does the system know it's e85?
Does it have a way to test the alcohol content, or does it just "guess", based on amount of timing/boost "allowed" before knock?

This seems like a decent way to get "race gas" tunes into these cars, as well.

I'm probably not the best person to explain this. But, less than five minutes after you fill up with any fuel after a E85/SID de-locking tune, the SID displays the amount and quality of fuel you have just put in the tank. So, there must be some sensors in the T5 & T7 suites that calculate the fuel mix.

PaulH can likely explain it a bunch better than I have.

(For those who don't read Braille, it says "Refueled 45 lit(ers) E85.)

Its kinda neat how it determines the mix, heres how I understand it. When the ECU sees that there has been a "refueling event" (i think its more than 10 liters according to the MIU) it forces a re-adapt cycle. During the first few minutes of driving the ECU determines with the o2 sensor the amount of correction require to achieve lambda=1, and basically it can just figure out the ethanol content from that info. Thats being overly simplified I'm sure, but thats the basic idea, theres no flexfuel sensor like most flexfuel cars, so no extra sensors to go wrong, an excellent solution IMHO.

And for the record, the tune that aireeca is running, and that my mom has been running in her Aero, and the tune that Delorean has been running in his 9-5 are all Mackan tunes, and they work really really nice.

It depends on the hardware if you want a stg1 flex with stock hardware the high rpm power will be limited on E85 by injector size. So we can do them that way like BSR or with larger injectors for top end power on E85. I have done lots both ways. They are all custom and many different packages can be tailored to what the owner wants. This is why there is no 1 package.

Like all tuned T7 NGKBCPR7s-11 gap at 1.0mm For E85 short trip in the cold winter BCPR6ES @1.0mm.
