Driving home a used car in NH

I'm looking to buy a used car in NH and a few that I am looking at are an hour away. Is there anyway to legally drive a used car home with a temp registration in this state?

I know in other states part of the problem is getting insurance, but seeing as how NH doesn't require insurance I'm thinking/hoping that there is a way to get a car home with little fan fair. I just don't have all the time in the world to be driving around.

Any insight/ideas would be great.

I am looking at Saabs, but there is a nice Volvo 240 for cheap that has caught my GF's eye.

Never mind, got it. Thanks!

" * I purchased a vehicle through a private sale. Can I drive it without plates to get the vehicle home?
No. You are required to obtain a 20-day temporary plate. Submit the following, along with a $10.00 fee, to the DMV, Concord, or any registration substation:

o A photo ID.
o Proof of residency.
o Proof of ownership.
o The seller’s name and address.

Only one temporary plate is allowed per person, per vehicle. Temporary plates are not recognized in the state of Massachusetts."

Here's a catch with the 20 day plate. It's technically a 10 day plate. You "need to get the car safety inspected in the first 10 days in order to use the next 10 days". However... I have (along with every other person I know) driven a car for the 20 days without getting an inspection. Usually a NH drivers license, a bill of sale for the car ( signed by both of you) and $10 can get you a plate.

Are you driving it just around NH, or any where else?

For the most part if you have a 2nd set of plates, and its not a long distance you have to drive. You can drive carefully, and get away with just putting on a spare set of plates.

Or the other thing you can do is if you have AAA, slap some plates on, and call for a tow. Just make sure when they ask why a tow, tell them its disable for some reason. Give an example. Also say yes if they ask if the car is registered. AAA will not tow an unregistered car. This is how I got my SPG home yesterday.

lol, the AAA scam is classic. I've done it more than a few times. Works great and costs nothing if you have good privileges.

Thanks for the thoughts. The car is about 40 miles from home but close to a DMV. If we do end up buying it I'll just do the legal thing, or in the worst case come back the next day with the proper documentation.

I have an old VA motorcycle plate somewhere. I think I'll be good if I duct tape it to the rear bumper.
