Bilstein or Koni?

We blew out a strut on the 9-3, I have the option of the Koni setup - struts and shocks only, no springs right now - or the Bilstein setup, same deal.

I know people seem to love their Koni kit with the springs and struts/shocks, but I don't know how well Jen will like the whole low-rider stance, or how well our bank account will do from this purchase.

I would love to call nick up and have him talk me into the full $750 koni kit, but I'm on the fents about that. Who is running Bilsteins and stock springs, anyone? Probably not worth the effort huh?

Anyone running just the koni shocks on stock 9-3 base springs? Again, probably a waste of labor not to replace those springs....

Dammit, I seem to be talking myself into buying the damn kit.

Anyway, any constructive input would be nice. I really can't afford the full kit, so I would like to avoid it, unless it would somehow cost me a ton more labor in the long run (due to a shit ride with the stock springs and koni or Bilstein shocks/struts)

[extra rant] shitty thing is that this always happens with my cars when I seem to have some extra $$$ for possibly buying a few go-fast bits, then BLAMO - flat tires, broken fuel pump, totally blown strut....fuck, just hold together long enough for me to get a damn tuned ECU into one of my damn cars!!! [/extra rant]

I cant give you any 9-3 advice but my 9000 has bilstein's and stock springs and the ride is kind of harsh when hitting bumps. It seems like the springs are too soft for the heavy damping of the shocks though Im not sure which model bilstein's they are. I've never driven a car with the koni's but you usually hear nothing but good things about them so you would think they're doing something right.

I'm currently running on Bilsteins HD's & stock springs. And as I'm sure some of the folks from the West Chester meet can tell you, it's pretty firm. In fact the viggen next to me had more give in the push down test :p. But other then that I am happy with it, it gives a nice firm feel in the turns & it's not to bad on the bumps (in comparison to busted/leaking stock, shocks/struts that I had) It my give you a nice dune buggy look but it rides nicly. I will buy Bilsteins again, when I need to.

I'd say the only thing lacking on the HD's is the adjustment. Koni Yellow's are awesome and top of the line. But as stated before they are pricey.

I'd say unless you were a serious track guy, the yellow's are overkill. If you are just looking for stock replacements, get the touring shock/struts or the KYB equivalent for that, both are very affordable.

After riding in many cars with Koni and blisten i would say koni, just because you have the option of always adjusting the firmness. Notice in a few years they start to get a little weak go up one level.

Well, I had Jen order the Konis - sans springs at this point.

I will deal with the spring situation, but maybe later this summer, and to be honest I will probably just install the front struts for now and then install the rears when I get the spring situation figured out.

At least the car will be safe at speeds above 25 mph.

Great, I was half expecting the rears to be like the 9000 rears...which are a bitch when the lower bolt is siezed up (like on my Aero).

Hopefully the front's aren't too troublesome.

The shitty thing is that the struts are in Eagan MN (20 min away) but since UPS doesn't deliver on weekends (unless you pay extra) I will have to wait until Monday :-(

Props to Nick T and his crew for sending them out quickly though! :-D

This is just me but I woulda suggested getting the springs as well and doing it all at once rather than having to pull the suspension apart latter just to add the springs and get another alignment.

Springs at same time as shock only an extra 20 minutes probably. vs. Springs down the road..............whole time to dissasemble like you were putting shocks on again.

Just me though.

..... and get another alignment.
Hahahaha.....hahahahha.....hahhaa

I'm not getting an allignment until I do as you say and replace the springs. No need IMO.

Maybe nobody is noticing this, but I am getting the struts because I have a BLOWN OUT (totally shot, oil leaking all over it) strut, the car is not drivable and it's the only car we own that my fiance can drive. Its not an option for me to order springs and wait for them to arrive now. And I have actually found enough people to support my threory that the universe will not implode if I have stock springs and Koni shocks/struts! It's true!
