Astro vs. Deer

I was halfway through my night route, 9 stops down, 9 to go and was on track for an early night. On KY 9, or the AA Highway, running an indicated 67(GPS speed was 62) when a 7 point buck(thats a male deer for you city slickers) "appeared" directly in my lane as I flicked my brights on. I was in the left lane . Going right wasn't an option as thats the direction he started moving. I clamped down on the binders and swerved left as far as I could. Not enough however. I caught the deer with the right front corner. He slid about 200 feet after the impact, indeed he was still moving as I was coming to a stop. A good ole boy behind me stopped and asked if I wanted the deer. I didn't, so with the officer on scene's permission(and our help)he loaded it into his 4x4 and took it who knows where.

Saaba, I think the high speed kept the damage to a minimum. I hit it under heavy braking and it went flying, literally.

Turbojohnny, property and liability only on a 10 year old van with 145k.

JK, yes, the mighty LeMons frame rack. I'm a Sad Panda, I've driven the piss out of that van and it's never failed me. I develop a relationship with vehicles that don't let me down. Hardcore from Cincy to JFK and back without so much as hiccup. It rocks. I'm pissed because the right side is where all the AC lines run and my AC no longer works. To fix it right will probably cost more than it's worth. I'm looking for another AWD Astro, but in truth, for my job, I need a full size 3/4 or 1 ton van.

Curly, was it an Expedition?

When we picked him up and put him in the GOB's Expedition I could feel the shattered bones. I can't imagine that there was much edible meat left, aside from deer burger.

Oh, and to rub salt in the wound, a Boone County Sheriff pulled me over an hour and a half later. For having a headlight out.

FYI, the brown stuff on the bottom of the bumper is dried deer poo. No, I haven't washed it off yet.

Its a bummer Deer don't carry insurance! My sister hit a deer in our family astro once, similar damage, except he hit more on the side. It was almost as if the deer ran into the van!

Hirsch, what is the AWD system in use on the astro? Is it the same as the S10 with a bravada full time transfer? I've always wondered.....

Tboy, I have no idea which AWD system it uses. It works and thats all I care about. It would make sense that it's the same system as the Bravada, but that would go against everything GM stands for.

Troy, no, thankfully the stench of gasoline has dissipated. I left the windows open for about a week straight when the temps were in the 90's and that took care of it.

I hit a deer, middle of last month and the damage was similar in form, but much less destruction. My hood is curled a little bit and the fender is curled in much the same with demolished lights on that side. I feel your pain, except I was going low speed, so I didnt mar anything internally.
