'91 900S Convertible: Replacing the Stereo

So I am new to this forum, and I don't have a Saab yet, though I've got one in mind I'm thinking of buying. :)

The car is a '91 900S Convertible. I had a question about the stereo system. The car I'm thinking of buying has the factory 'Clarion made for Saab' radio and graphical EQ in the dash (radio is in the upper part of the dash, EQ is in the lower part of the dash). I am most likely going to replace this radio. I would like to, if possible, hook the factory graphical EQ to the aftermarket radio so that it will still function with a new radio. Is this possible, and, if so, how would I go about doing this? I know how to remove the radio and EQ (insert DIN removal tools and pull out, disconnect wiring harnesses), but would need to know how to wire the EQ to an aftermarket radio, if at all possible.

Also, does the factory graphical EQ need a code to be operated? I know the factory radio does. Should I just bypass the factory graphical EQ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I'm fairly certain that you won't be able to do that. The Clarion units connect with c-bus cables. They use a Clarion digital protocol to talk to each other. Getting around that would be problematic at best, and impossible at worst. I've got an Alpine head unit in my '93 vert that has a built-in equalizer. You'd be better going that route. You'll also want to bypass the amp for the rear speakers mounted under the back seat and wire the rear speakers directly to the head unit. The Clarion head unit amplifies the front speakers, and the rear speakers are amped separately. You'll have trouble if you amplify an already amplified signal from the new head unit.

Yes,it can be done.... A handful of people have used the stock eq however its not worth the hassle. The eq/radio is so old and outdated (even back then the sq was crappy at best) that you will spend. Hours wiring the eq to the aftermarket deck and it will only make the stereo sound worse.

Possibly do a google search and for the wiring on the eq. It used a din plug and you simply need to determine what each wire in the din plug does and wire it to the RCA cables coming out of whatever aftermarket deck you get.

I would trash the entire oem stereo.........
