WTB: Winter Beater for around 600 bucks

So it's that time of year... I'm looking for a winter beater that is in somewhat decent condition. I'm not looking for a car to dump hundreds of dollars into, just a car that I can bomb around in for the winter months and maybe fix a few little things here and there. I don't want a rotted out car...

Although I would prefer a Saab, I'm not too fussy as long as it's a solid deal and decent car.

Budget = Around 600.00. Now, if you have a 250.00 car, don't expect me to pay 600.00 for it. I'd prefer to find a car around 450 - 500 dollars.

Wants:

* FWD or AWD
* 4 cylinder
* Minimal rust or non structural rust. I don't need a pretty body, just a car that isn't going to fail inspection. I don't feel like welding metal in to make it road worthy.
* Stick shift definitely preferred.
* Somewhat reliable car that isn't going to bust every week.

Do Not Want:

* Cars with blown motors or transmissions.
* Cars with rotted out frames
* Cracked windshields
* Pricey or extensive repairs (unless it's a c900 and I have the parts)

Let me know what you have or know of, I am not too picky...

i'm looking for a winter car.

i was looking at a Ford tempo the other day for 500.
But im trying to find an 89-91 subaru i wanna drive stick, automatic i cant stand. And plus the subaru is awd and that is a plus in the snow.
Just man up and put winters on the Viggen Zach.
$600 would get you a nice set of steelies/winter tires from the tire rack.

Viggens are too rare for snow*

Great call.

I picked those up for $100 on CL last winter. You could use the rest to wash and wax the car weekly. The 9-3 was epic in the snow.

It's the fact that I don't think it would do so well in the snow... Being stage 3 and lowered, I'd get belly hung on the side skirts and would absolutely destroy my front bumper. My car would be useless in the mountains of NH and VT where I live with that much power as well... I spin on dry pavement in the summer, try getting up some of the 10% inclines up here on ice and snow.

Ideally, non turbo's are the best for winters up here. I drove my 90 900T in the winter and it was an absolute joke once it hit boost, I can't even imagine what my Viggen would be like.

For me, it's easier to just buy a winter beater for 600 bucks, retain the little value of my car and not have to worry about wrecking or getting stuck.

And FWIW, 400 cars in America would be considered rare by just about anyone. Let alone the ones that are destroyed. I prefer to keep my car clean, nothing wrong with that :).

Now, back to the original topic... I'm in need of a winter beater, not snow tires and steel rims.

You handled that very well, carry on. Good luck with the search ;)
I would consider selling my NA... but I think it is worth more than 600.

Try finding a non turbo NG900, put snows or studs on it, and it will plow up those 10% inclines. I drove my NA through the worst of snow and ice last year on the way to cortland and back, never had an issues (knock on wood).
