Getting quality wood to make it a "class" job would be difficult unless you make it different panels. Even that luan ply looks like luan ply. It's a thin veneer mahogany but never quite cuts it IMHO. I built a few boat hatches from it and always thought it looked kind of cheap. I mean it looks smooth but probably because you know it's plywood?
Perhaps if you did a strip of leather overlay on the sides and then a panel of wood in the center?
Look in a directory for exotic woods and there is some wild stuff out there and it does not cost that much.
