I have noticed this sound coming from the engine of my 2001 Aero for a while now and I havent givin it much thought until recently because it seems to get louder now.
It happens when i accelerate and the rpms are at approx. 2200 - 3500 rpm.. The noise sounds like a.. ticking.. or sounds almost as if something is loose?.. I had someone else listen to it and they said it sounds like pinging from the engine. but i think thats unlikely because I always use at least 92 octane..
anybody know what is going on? :?

I have found the source of the problem.. i changed the spark plugs a while back.. and it turns out .. Thats a no no.. lol according to the saab dealer around here he said the plugs should last the lifetime of the car.. or the SID would come up with an indication msg...

 Mike, I was so thinking that eh, the cause of that was the spark plugs. I was a little iffy on the subject when you wanted to change them because I asked around a few places, even Taliaferro's and they did not recommend any other plug other than the original NGK plugs because that can damage your Direct Ignition Cassette. I don't know for sure but they run around over $300 but that figure mite be in UK Sterling. Anywho, I hope you will fix this problem asap to avoid any large sums of money getting into the pockets of the mechanic lol. Good luck man 8)

I don't know what to tell you. The only wierd noise my car makes is the brakes because of brake dust. A little squeak here and there. I would definetly recommend a SAAb authorized mechanic. If you don't have one in your area tell me and I will calll my guy and ask him for you. I am no car expert and I have never taken a mechanic class but the pinging might be either a problem with the manifold or maybe since you nought and replace the spark plugs your timing is off.

I duno its something no one has every heard before!..
ive asked so many ppl about it.. and yeah if you can call up that guy u know and ask him about it.. so like i said its only when i hit boost and its a ticking.. or a rattling noise.. almost sounds like a loose.. bracket of some sort.. but it only makes that noise underboost..
i was listening to it today and sometimes it sounds more like a 'pop' then a rattle.. that was when the guage was in the first bit of the red.. sort of like a back fire.. but.. i dunno.. who knowsss.. haha ask that guy or just PM me and give me his number or something..
thanks!

I know why your 9-5 pings

Dobsi I finally got around to calling my saab mechanic and here is what he said......

1. It could be from putting crappy has in your car. Try it with premium and see if the sounds continues.

2. If the sound does continue he is positive that your turbo is going south and need to have it worked on.

hope that help buddy

Okay.. i will keep puttin in the best grade fuel i can get around here.. 91-93.. a couple places sell 94.. octane that is.. its pretty much the best grade fuel u can get around here.. without running racing fuel.. at about 5 bucks a litre..
hopefully its just a fuel problem.. also do u think i should put one of those.. fuel injector.. cleaner things in the tank?.. it has 160K Km on it.. all highway km..
thanks..

I say go for the fuel injector cleaner cause it can't hurt right? But you shouldn't have to run 94 octance... 88/91 should be enough. I use 88 for my 2000 and I haven't ran into problems but maybe cause it only has 55k on it. I would say next time you are empty add the feul injector cleaner and maybe 2/3 gallons of the exspensive stuff. If it still does it I would bet its your turbo cause 160k can run its course on a turbo.

My turbo went at 113,000km  and how I came to noticing this was my car was running very slow, it was idling out of whack and it was making a rattling noise like there was a loose screw. It got me worried but I still drove it. A week earlier this happened I noticed smoke coming out of my tailpipe and some coming out of my engine, was not a pretty site. I was convinced; I need to go to the mechanic!!! So I called up a place I'm very familiar who specialize in Saabs ONLY!!! I would not dare touch a dealership, they over charge so I went to Beacon Motors Saab Specialists! They're about 30 minutes from my house so I risked the trip and went. I called to make an appt but they said they were booked solid, since it was a Friday, but I told him my dilemma and he said come over here right away. When I went (Christian, Swedish guy lol) understood the problem right away and went onto fixing it. So basically oil was leaking in my turbo and in my TB that caused a major screw up lol. Mike, do you get any weird smells or oil coming out of the tailpipe?? Shoot if u lived close I'd take a look at it for you:( Well I wish you luck in solving this problem as sometimes they can cause inconvenience to driving a real automobile they call Saab built by only the best, and it being an Aero?? Shoot how do you not get speeding tickets? hahahaha just kidding :D

Similar weird sound from Turbo / Engine

Mr.Dobsi .. I've just read the chain of posts about a pinging / tapping noise you had while accelerating.

I have a '89 9000CD with a 2L turbo, and I think I'm getting the same / similar sounds that you've described. Only when the turbo spins up to the red does the sound become loud enough to hear it. The sound is a tapping sound similar to that of the 'tappets' (I'm obviously not a mechanic), but then slightly different .. like you, I've taken many friends in the car and no one has heard this sound before.

I'll be getting the car looked at later this week, but am interested to know what you're problem ended up being.

hmmm,

pretty low mileage; popping or tapping sound on boost.
just a few questions to clarify things maybe help stir more thought for potential answers.

does this occur at a standstill, while you rev the engine?
does this occur while driving under boost only?
are you getting any CEL's (Check Engine Light/Lamp)?
any chance your backfiring back into the intake?
does the car still perform like it used to? or is it better or worse?

The 9-5 PCV system is screwed. Oil and fumes are dumped back into the intake so if something is not right with the hoses, check valve or trap, you are going to get oil and not just fumes dumped into the intake. 9-5 intercoolers are regularly black and coated with oil sludge on the inside. This is going to significantly reduce your fuels octane and if this is combined with old or incorrect plugs, youre going to have ignition problems. Make sure the PCV system is updated, and your head bolts are torqued to spec (even if there are no visible leaks). Get the correct plugs in the car, it is a very simple DIY job.

9000CD 2.0L 5spd turbo

g'day,

I can't hear the sound while idling, nor when rev'ing the engine at stand still.

Also, if I keep the car in 2nd and gently increase speed, making sure the turbo boost doesn't go past half way .. I still don't hear the sound. Then, as soon as I put my foot down and the turbo boosts up to the red line, the 'tapping' begins.
[oh .. I just understood your question  .. yes .. I can only hear the sound on boost]

Nope .. no CEL's.

I'm not sure what 'backfiring back into the intake' means .. however, it does remind me of a problem I have. If I let the car idle for a minute or two, then _a lot_ of smoke pours out the exhaust. I've been told that this is the 'brushes' or something .. don't know if this is related.

As for performance .. it doesn't seem to be affected (well, not noticably).

Any more thoughts or questions that may help!?

Thanks heaps

then _a lot_ of smoke pours out the exhaust
a lot of smoke pouring out the exhaust may mean you have a broken seal somewhere about the turbo and oil is leaking into your exhaust

don't understand why the tapping would be under boost only though

had to reread to understand if the problem was on the later 9-5 or the older 9000.......,

black smoke .. Hmmm ..., get that when your running rich too. Especially when just temporary as described...

sounds relative to the turbo wearing down..., rattling only on boost...but you mentioned that the performance hasn't obviously degraded. I had some AC lines causing my rattling noise....on the drivers side....had to sort that out for my noise to go away...

I'm wondering if Burnside has seen your post...I think he's running something similar to yours on a older 9000.
