So I saw what I think was a re-run of the newer version of Wheeler Dealers on HDT last night. They ended up doing a 2002 Saab 9-3 Convertible.

They spent an absurd amount of money on random things like the GT17 turbo. My question is, why did they say the steering rack clamp and brace was there to prevent cracking of the firewall? I have never heard of this before.

I watched this last night.

I'd never heard of the firewall thing either, and they never specified if it was something that was exclusive to the 9-3 convertible.

They did the same thing with an older 900 a few seasons back. If I remember correctly they sold that one to someone on Saab Central.

EDIT: Beat to it and corrected.

That's right.
The brace not only tightens up the steering but it also prevents the fire wall from flexing and cracking around the bracket.
Its a big deal over here. Its only on RHD models.
If you get a brace on before it cracks it will be fine. If you don't, its a massive job to try and fix it.
I've had a brace on mine for a while now and mines fine .
But I know of people who's firewall has cracked and it was a $1500 job to fix.

I watch that show all the time, love it. Hadn't seen the one with the 9-3, I saw the one with the Classic 900 Turbo. I wish there were more shows like these but from the US instead of all the lame customizing car shows. Who cares about Justin Bieber's Cadillac?
