Wheel powder coating project.

Started the process of powder coating my Super Aero wheels today. Only had enough time to lay on 1 coating of aircraft-grade paint stripper, and then rinse them off. If my buddy had been able to stay at his shop tonight I would have hopefully gotten at least 1 stripped, sandblasted, and powder coated.

Here's the pic I got.

If the stripper didn't totally remove the OE finish, it was soft enough to scrape off with my fingernail. 1 more coat of the stripper tomorrow night, and then I'll brush all the paint (buddy and his boss say they were powder coated from the factory... true?) off and get some more work done.

What color is your car and what color do you plan for the wheels ?

Just this past Sunday, I got this photo of my newly powder coated wheels. They are going to be put on the Cirrus White 9000. White car w/white wheels. I will pick them up on Thursday. Was also able to get the center caps sprayed with the same color. Next to put on new tires and then onto the car.

I am hoping that the white car with matching color wheels will be sharp looking. It was a combination that was suggested to me. Not finding anything else that appealled to me, I went with it.

Is the entire car going to be white? Trim included... I think that monochromatic scheme will look really good.

Got the car last summer and gave it to my wife for the holidays. Had to do a fair amount of refurbishing work. The car had some minor body damage at the left rear. That was repaired and then car was mostly repainted, photo below.

The headliner and the cloth panels on the doors were all shot. So a new headliner was installed and I had white leather placed on the doors. Next photo shows new interior.

Currently working on my '91 Cirrus White 9000T. It will be getting similiar interior treatment. May have the inserts on the seats changed to the white leather. Seats currently are grey.

Sorry, did not mean to hijack your thread !

I wouldnt sand blast alloy wheels. Ive seen really bad results and pitting. Then again give it a try if you dont want to spend a good amount of hours sanding by hand

My wheels were glass bead blasted as opposed to sand blasting. The shop was also concerned about pitting the alum wheels. My understanding is that the glass beads 'explode' upon impact. Never saw the actual process, so I don't more than that.

The pressure of the sand blaster is variable, and I'd obviously start in discreet location. FWIW, the aircraft paint stripper does most of the work.

Black chrome. My buddy's shop will do the wheels for you. I can get a price quote...

Pics will follow - gotta get the wheels on Thursday, then decide on some rubber. Have a set of four Yokohamas - basically still usable - 1/8" of tread over the wear bars. But I was thinking of a new set of tires. Since this car is my wife's and she does not drive as 'spirited' as I do, might need to see what is out there. There is also the rubber that is currently on the car, but I plan to put that into storage for emergency use only. Rubber is also good, but it is two different brands.

Also as part of the tire purchase decision, will be checking who can install the tires without screwing up the new coating. Will need to check on their mounting equip and techniques ! The last thing I want is to get these wheels scratched up, even before they get on the car.

OK - I was finally able to pickup the wheels late on Monday afternoon. Sorry with the constant rain for the past couple of days, these 2-pics are inside a storage area. Tomorrow afternoon, I hope to stand the wheels next to the one 9000 and see how they look. Wheels were coated in CIRRUS WHITE powder, match the original car color.

Well here in Pennsylvania, we had really great weather today. So I pulled out two of the newly powder coated wheels and placed them on the ground next to each wheel. Trying to get a feel for how they will look - I know, they're a little on the short side, but with a tire . . .

This is the '91 with a 5-spd tranny. This car is not getting these powder coated wheels. The wheels are to go on my wife's 9000. This car will be going in the body shop in a couple of weeks, getting some minor rear end collision damage repaired and a full repaint - Cirrus White. Then a new headliner and some other interior upgrades.

This is my wife's 9000. This car has an auto tranny and will be getting the white wheels in about a month.

So what do you think ? BTW, the center caps are matching color.

Thanks - I like that much better. I don't have the proper software nor the talent to do that kind of manipulation of the image. Looks good !

I did my wheels this past weekend. Put 4 new tires on as well, 225/50R16. I think the wider tires really help give the car a more athletic stance. Heard they left a massive burnout on the road by the shop too... go figure.

Better pics (clean car too!) will be coming sometime.

This was the first wheel I did... Had a bit of a learning curve. Cut me some slack; I've never powder coated a wheel from start to finish before.

Say what you will, but it's freeeeeee.

Center caps are still in the works. I had no time to finish them before Easter... been either in class, studying, or drinking since Sunday...

I did buy some paint today, but the caps are at the shop, and I'll get those finished up soon.

Looks good! How do you like those Exclaims? Mine are holding up decent, though I am going to need some new fronts soon... My mom just got some for her 9-5 and had them mounted and balanced yesterday.

Tires are nice. Anything was an upgrade over the winter tires I had on before. One of the rears had lost a wheel weight... very annoying.
