What brand new car under $20K???

So I'm really trying to find a dealer that won't screw me over on trade-in value with my Volvo S60R. All the dealers I've tried so far will only give me around $9K when I still owe $15K. But anyway, I want a Brand New car under $20K and have been looking at Scion's, Honda Fit, Ford Focus, and Ford Fiesta but have pretty much narrowed it down to the Fit. I know I may get a lot of crap for driving a Fit but I like the looks and it has great handling and surprising performance for what it is. Also has strong aftermarket support, perfect reliability and strong resale. Plus the payments and insurance would be lower then for my used R. Can you guys think of any other options and why? And what are your thoughts on the Fit.

i have a 09 ford focus 5 speed sel and it gets 38 mpg highway 32 in the city these are my actual figures as i do the math at every fill up and i normally average about 35-36 for my weekly commute 70% highway driving.... a new ford focus is only 18ish depending on how you work the dealer

i never drove the fit but the civics were next in line to the focus for me, but they offered half the options

i love the sync in the fords it works awsome handsfree everything is sweet...
Why not a KIA? The SOUL is actually a really nice "cheap" car - Nice cargo room too.
I think the Fit looks very good for a small hatch, has good load carrying capacity for its size and versatility. My buddy gets 38 mpg out of his, day in day out. With a flat roof rack he carried a bunch of wood from Home Depot, no problem. Canoes, no problem. Between Hondas and Toyotas, I'd take Honda any time. Their cars are reliable, easy to work, have good handling and good resale value. Nice choice.
I could NEVER drive a Kia, let alone the Soul. It is absolutely hideous and has one of the worst interiors I have ever seen.

NISSAN CUBE get's that privileged title... have you seen that mistake of a vehicle?

Mazda 3 = too small for average American consumer - ICK The Mazda 6 (Hatchback) is a nice car.
honda fit and mazda 3 i think the honda fit is smaller isnt it
I have an xb and its head and shoulders above any other car for the price imho. It gets mid 20s mileage, fits stuff that only midsize suvs can handle, incredible ac, and is super comfortable for my 6'3 frame. I had a escape b4 and would rather drive that because of the v6 and much better interior quality. but really its not as comfortable as my scion.

The fit doesn't fit my large frame at all. And its puny compared to the scion.

I would suggest a base escape or crv that could be had for your price point if you haggle. But if you must go cheaper, ill take my xb over any honda, mazda, toyota, or. Ford of similar value.

And I'm not even an xb fanboi. Its just too good for the price. Strong resale too. I went to price out a new equinox giving my xb on trade and was surprised how much the trade in value of my car was.

A focus thanks to the sync would be a close second.
Kia Forte Koup, Mk6 Golf, Mazda 3, $20k will get you a 6mt Sonata which has a 200hp direct injected 4 that gets 35mpg.
You could prolly get into a jetta for your price point and that would be a sweet car too.
I could sell my xb on craigslist for the same money I would pay to buy out my lease. Really impressive resale I think. Lease buyoutsare usually not cost effective.

In fact, if you want to buy my xb for 15k id sell it to you. Its got 24k miles, warranty, and is mint. Silver automagic
When I was thinking about a scion it was for a tC or xD, I really don't like the boxy style, hence why I hate the Soul. The Cube is pretty bad as well yes, the only production car that was designed to look different on one side then the other side. I'm not sure I could get a new Mazda3 for under 20K. Can't do any VW as I need something that is going to be very cheap to fix, (the reason I'm getting rid of the R) plus i HATE VWs.

My son has a Mazda 6 hatch, 2008 was the last year. For the US, they don't make Mazda 6 hatchbacks in the new body style.

He drove both when he was buying a couple years back, he preferred the 6 but I liked the 3 better. In the hatchback version.

Mazdaspeed 3 would be the car to own, but not for the price point of this thread.

The TC is new for '11 with more power and other upgrades for under $20k. I think it will be in showrooms before October. I would not buy a 2010.
