Started to repair the whaletail as well. But I was very suspicious about repairing the rubber since it is warping a bit and has a nasty crack. The rubber absorbs moisture and sunlight harms it so I'm not sure why the factory decided to make it like this anyway. + I'm not sure how to fix the rubber for it to look good. Some kind of fashion from the 80s I guess.

So I decided to make it myself from scratch.
This is where I'm at so far:

When those 3 parts are joined it will be a one piece, sealed and hollow fiberglass/epoxy part. that bolts on just like the real thing. Only it fits better and weighs a lot less.

Talking about weight (not it's important to me but just interesting comparison):
The original plastic part of the tail weighs 2,5kg
The original rubber trim weighs 2,7kg
My fiberglass trim at this point weighs 900g

To finalize it, I have to bolt it to the car and get overall look perfect.
Later on I'll paint it to match the rubber trim

If you made a mold of that surround and popped off a dozen or so, you'd make a good buck. Very nice work. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Also definitely in for these as long as they aren't a fortune!
