I have always gone to these the past couple years both as a spectator and in various cars and it's always a good time. I just wanted to let everyone know about them. I know Saabs aren't the best drag cars but it's fun to get your benchmark time and watch all the other cars there.

Brainerd International Raceway

May 6 & 20
June 3 & 17
July 1 & 22
August 5 & 26
September 2 & 8

5pm to dusk

Spectators: $5
Racers: $25

Unlimited passes as many times as you want before dark, all you need is a street legal car and a DOT approved helmet. (Snowmobile/ATV helmets work)

Top 8 reaction times win prizes and also clubs for breaking certain MPH marks.

These usually bring in some pretty nice cars in addition to the typical high school kids in 16+ second cars.

Yeah I remember him talking about that. It seems like he got all the issues worked out right before he sold it. Perfect for me :)

It seems to be boosting correct levels. It hit's ~14psi then settles down to 12psi which from what I've read is correct for a stock tuned car.

But at the track, I hope you have an aftermarket intercooler. You WILL heat soak, and probably be dissapointed like I was with my numerous runs in the 9000.

I would run with low 14/high 13sec. on the street, but couldn't break below a 14.881@98mph. Pulled boost hardcore until I got moving and got some airflow, even then it wouldn't allow more than 8psi. Most runs were low 15's for me.

Tried everything, spraying water, spraying what I can on the IC, medical ice packs, physically pushing the car whith it off to the line with the hood open and only having it run to pull into the staging area, still only made about 3-4psi off the line, max of ~8psi by the end.

Stock IC's suck. I do have an XSPower 26x6x3.5 2.5" inlet/outlet that drops right into my 9000, stock piping and all.
I don't know if the Viggen is the same, but if you do have the same problems I did, I can bring it with for you and we could give it a shot if you're not happy with your runs.

If you want to bring it with, go for it. Haha, I'm more going for the fun of running a couple easy runs and not breaking anything and seeing the other cars.

Yeah for sure, I'm driving over from Aitkin and we're leaving here before 4 so I should have a while to let it cool and watch some of the other guys first runs.

So....I need drag racing advice. I ended up with a best of just over 16 flat. I ran a few times but stayed consistent with that. I'm not really launching my car which might be why. I was kinda babying it. This was my first time at the strip with a FWD car and the first with a 5 speed. I am used to racing auto RWD V8s which I've found are completely different.

I don't have my time slips, my friend thought they were trash and threw them away. Ugh. But I was running ~2.5-2.6 60 foot times and right around 16.0-16.3 @ ~90mph. Someone needs to decipher this for me and help.

Ohh and shifting advice would be great, I didn't just step off because I was scared to grenade my tranny.

These are part of your problem. If you're scarred to break a trans and decide to baby it a bit you're not going to get very great times.

That's the issue with drag racing, its relatively hard on the car if you want to do the best you can. This is the reason the only way I'll be on the 1/4 strip is rolling through after I come out of turn 10 on my way to turn 1.

My process I did each time.

Avoid burnout box- Didn't burn them at all (wasn't sure with weak saab trannys and FWD)
Stage, clutch in, rev to ~2500rpm
At last yellow light slip the clutch and pedal down (I never dropped the clutch and I had to feather 1st gear to stop wheel slip, my reaction times were great, always close to .1 or below.)
Shift 1st to 2nd to 3rd just before redline step down clutch let off gas off clutch back on gas
Then what was hard was I'd get just before the finish line and I would need to shift into 4th, the last time I ran it in 3rd right up to redline and just got over the line and it was better.

Sorry if this seems really noobish but this is my first FWD 5 speed car and from today I can tell I seriously need some help

Looks like you got too much wheelspin judging by your 60ft time. Rarely do I see Saabs hookup well and see a lot of 2.4's and 2.3's. 2.1-2.2 is a reasonable and attainable goal. Every tenth off your 60ft is worth 2 tenths off your 1/4. So getting a 2.2 alone right there would knock close to a second off your 1/4.

You will want to dry airing UP your rear tires to about 40psi and airing down the fronts to about 20psi. This will increase your contact patch and reduce the squat to the rear both increasing traction.

Shift points are very important. You gauge your shift points by where power falls off on a dyno. You shift a bit above where the power drops so that it puts you in the meat of your power band for next gear. So if say your car falls off big time at 5600, you may want to shift at 5800, I think peak tq is 2500, so maybe that is the ideal place to be left in the next gear after you shift. Try and see for yourself.

Also important is what gear you are crossing the line in, each gear change slows you down. If you are shifting into say 4th to cross the line but can get away with staying in 3rd before the rev limiter, that may actually be faster. Again, you will have to try it out.

That's just my experience. I am only a so called "Magazine Racer" and so my few hundred passes at the strip and bracket racing experience are not worth much :p
