This is The Official Bicycle Thread.

Road bikes, mountain bikes, bmx bikes, tandem bikes, recumbent bikes, unicycles, and anything in between are welcome.

Post up nice pictures of your ride. Tell us what year, make, and model it is. Also tell us about modifications to your bike, mileage on the bike, and other interesting facts as well.

After posting pics, feel free to leave a link to more pictures too!

I went and did some lift serviced downhill riding for the first time ever yesterday. I'm hooked. This is going to be a problem since I've already got 2 other things to spend my $$$ on in the summertime... an 85 SAAB, and an 03 SAAB.

But the good thing is, I get free chairlift rides! My bike needs some goodies though.

Awesome! I've even meaning to get off the singletrack and try the DH. There's a local ex-landfill.....we I mean ski hill around here that just started doing this this summer. But it's pricey at $20 for just two hours.

I get lift rides for free!!! We do a lot of work with them in the winter and get free skiing there, so we talked to guest services and were able to work out a deal for the summer too. I know where I'll be spending most of my days off now.

ya its great, going to highland on sunday with the bike on the left. Perfect park bike, wouldnt hold up to the more "natural" downhill but its a blast at highland

I'm heading back up to the hill today. Going to swap my 2.7's on this morning, those should give me a bit more confidence and stability. As I understand it, a lot of hardcore DH'ers won't use such wide tires, because they like to be able to have more maneuverability. But being a nOOb I'm definitely not at the level where I'm rocketing around banked turns or anything like that... yet!

I gota a full 105 group set to fit up..

This will be my first bike build and I'm looking forward to it..:)

Not the standard fare here but.......

We all follow our heart. I was a fan of the old banana seat bikes from my youth, so I went and built this as a bit of a tribute, (because I cant spell omage'). Started life as a new gen Schwinn Wallymart thing...then I got out the cutting wheel and the torch, threw a bunch of money at my local chrome plater, got out my spray gun and....... Cheers, Bob T.

2000 Gary Fisher Sugar 1 Team SAAB. Just finished it this morning. I started with only the frame that I bought on eBay. I used about 90% original factory spec. Exceptions are tires (tough to find good 14 year old rubber), seat (same brand, better model), grips (I liked the Gary Fisher retro grips), and that's about it. Had the SID SL fork built by Hippie Tech Suspension in Idaho. Total weight 23.5 lbs.

Yeah, I'll ride it. Nothing too serious though. Some of the parts were hard enough to find the first time. LOL!

Just curious if anyone here has converted their 3x9/3x10 mountain bike to 1x9/1x10? I'm not a hardcore cyclist by any means. I like to ride casual lift serviced downhill once a week and some cross country. I'm always on the middle ring up front, and the rear cassette seems to give me all the gearing I need high or low. I'm hoping to simplify the bike a bit with fewer gears and upgrade to some bigger brakes.
I just went to a 2x10 and I love it. Don't miss the third ring at all. A few friends of mine with fatbikes ride with xx1 stuff, they also really like it. Its not for me though, I need those big gears as I love going fast when I get a chance to. I do ride in the small ring, 90% of the time.

Really depends on your riding style. From a maintenance and simplicity standpoint it makes lots of sense, but damn it ain't cheap and you may find yourself reaching for taller gears that aren't there.
I wouldn't be spending much on the setup at all if I go forward with it. $20 bash guard, $10 inner guide, keep my existing crank and just swap the rings for a single speed 32t, another $20. Simple as that. Could shorten the cage on the rear derailleur, but not needed. Then I can get rid of my combo shifter/lever for the front and upgrade to a full Hayes front setup and at least upgrade to a larger disk in the back. Are there any known drawbacks to running a big big disk like a 180 or even 200?
I have been running a 1x10 on a hardtail of mine, with a raceface narrow-wide chain ring, and an XTR clutch rear derailleur.

I would go with the narrow-wide ring instead of the guard and guides. Those things are annoying. I have been super happy with my setup. The 30T ring has built in spacers to help with the chainline and keep the chain clear of the chainring tabs. It's a slick setup. Works with 9-10-11 speed drive trains too. You can find them for around $40.

All a larger disc in back is going to do is give you more initial torque, and lock the wheel up faster. Probably won't do you any good unless you are cooking rotors and pads now...I'm about 230lbs, and I actually run a 140mm rear on my fatbike for winter because it's less likely to skid and break through the snow.


180 rotors, and nice pads are all you should need...
