Tensioner pulley not..well..tensing?

Hey guys, as some of you know I've had my car up on blocks doing all kind of work to it this summer...finally got it put together last friday, had some problems with the battery and electrical system but those seem to be worked out. I got it to turn over and start, so we are making progress...Right now the problem is the serp belt is shredding, it appears the tensioner isn't putting enough tension on the system. Foolishly, I left the hex wrench in the tensioner when I removed the belt, I'm guessing that's what did it. Will replacing the whole tensioner solve the problem?
Well it certainly won't hurt to replace the tensioner if its not doing the job anymore. You can't just assume that this is the only problem causing your belt to be short lived. Look at the other pulleys, see if they have play in them, or are locked up. Then go from there.
