would your run into any back pressure issues running straight pipes from the cat back with no muffler?

Why not, you would be running a more free flowing system, why would there be back pressure?

it's not always about slapping the hugest pipes on there that you can fit.

I added a free flowing resonator to my saabsport catback and got a crisper throttle response, and the stage 3 actually felt like it got a little better with that tiny bit of extra backpressure in place.

this is really only somewhat true, with turbo cars generally, less backpressure is better, no backpressure is even better still. the turbo adds all the backpressure that the engine needs to run correctly. now with something like T8 like abdukted said, since the computer knows too much about whats going on, it might actually cause a loss of power, though even if it did, it would be a very minimal loss.

also it might be good if you told us, what year 9-3. the newer 9-3 SS/combi with t8 engine management is way for fussy to small changes in hardware... and we thought we had it rough with a t7

read up on corky bells exhaust literature.

You NEED backpressure, your better off concentrating on a more free flowing design rather then bigger piping.
I know gutting the cat would make the exhaust more free flowing. Would that cause issues?

dunno about straight pipes but with the cat back i just put on i can definitely feel increase throttle response and maybe a hint of more power i ran the car for about a minute with nothing on from the cat back and no CELs sparked up but i didnt drive any where.

Didnt drive it like that though so dunno about the feel or power gain/loss.

Give it a shot... the worst thing that could happen is you need to but a muffler.
