Interview

How long have you owned this car?
-Bought the car in 2003. I am the third owner.

Is there anything unique about the history of this car?

-I bought this car literally from the back of an ambulance back in 2003 -- I had owned an '88 SPG and this car was local and well known to me. It had just come up for sale, but I wasn't in the market -- that is, until I was in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. The '88 was totaled. I told my wife while on the gurney in the back of ambulance to call the selling party and not to let it go. The rest, as they say, is history...

Why did you choose this car to purchase?

-The previous owner had done some work on it, and it was well known in the area to be something of a sleeper. The car was always garage kept, and never driven in the rain. Being a Commemorative, it truly was a unique example of the marque.

What other cars did you consider?

-None.

What was your objective with this car?

-Enjoy it, drive it, preserve it.

What tuning style would you describe this car as?
-I wanted this car to look somewhat stock, but have that look, you know, you see it and there's something about it you know is just a bit beyond. I never wanted it to be over the top. Just a classic, simple lines, low stance (overused term, but nothing else describes it), and comfortable to drive.

Who helped you build this car?

-Some work had been started by the previous owner: SPG panels and SAS Whale tail cosmetically, suspension mods and some engine work. However some of the engine work was somewhat counter productive (CAI right behind the intercooler???) and just didn't make sense. A lot of that was removed and improved upon. I did the entire deconstruction and rebuild myself, but had all paint work done at Unlimited Autobody (Unlimited Auto Body - Home). The new leather was installed at S&S Auto Sales and Service (S & S Auto Sales). S&S were also instrumental in guidance and support, not to mention supplies of old parts as needed during the build. Great bunch.

What makes your car special?

-The way it drives, handles. It's a go-kart.

What is your favorite part/feature/function?
-Both the suspension set-up and the tuning done to the car. Car feels like new.

Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car?
-S&S played a huge role. But also I remember Todd Campisano's Eduardian Gray SPG "back in the day" (15 years ago? 20?) and the work he'd done. This at a time LONG before Saab's were considered for such mods. I remember he totalled that car then pretty much dropped from the scene for a while. Todd, it's great to have you back in the Saab fold!

What don't you like about this car?
-Nothing.

What was your biggest obstacle in building this car?
-$$$

How did you overcome the issue?
-Save, save, save. Buy the parts a little at a time over a period of about 3 or 4 years, then a mad dash to do the build in about 3 months.

What would you change if you could?

-T5 conversion perhaps?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project?

-11

What would you do to the car if money were no object?

-Drop a GMPP LSX crate engine? Convert to Haldex XWD perhaps?

Who has been your biggest critic of this project?

-No one.

What do your family and friends say about this car?

-Sister in law wants it. Dad tells me never to sell it. Keep it in the family.

What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car?

-Haven't really had one that I can think of.

Has this car competed in any events? Results?
-Carlisle won 2nd place in best in show for 900's I think in 2009 (?), Todd C. won first. Won 1st in I think 2005 or '06 at Carlisle

What is your favorite place to drive this car?

-I live at the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in rural Virginia. Virtually anywhere out here has great roads to drive this car.

What is your ideal day with this car?
-75 degrees, sunny, sunroof open, windows down, just going for a drive. Could be to a client meeting, could be to the local store, could be just to drive.

Who gets to drive this car?

-My wife occassionally, but then she has her '91 900SE Convertible, too.

If you had to name your car, what would you name it?

-"SCHWEDE"

What was your previous project?

-1988 SPG.
What is your next project?
-2006 GTO

What one word best describes your car?

-By twin boys call it "Lightening McQueen" (But then they also call the GTO "Lightening"...)

Anything else you'd like to share?

-Just wanted to thank everyone for your votes and comments! Very flattering. IJ, hilarious!

Keep on Saabin' folks! If you're in the market and have the means, go buy new! Saab needs your cash! (Thinking of a 9-5 in the next year or so myself...)

Thank you everyone! Much appreciated!

@ Bullseye: My wife still comments on what you said as we pulled into Carlisle a couple years ago and you were directing cars. Do you remember? "Freakin' gorgeous" :)

That was a huge compliment, considering your sweet Viggen.
