Saab Sonata

I am putting my flame suit on, this should be fun.

All set to replace my wife's '04 9-3 with an '09 9-3. It's pretty much the same car, small improvement's but let's be honest here. Very much the same car from '03. In 2004 it had a $28k sticker with metallic paint, auto, powerseat.

So we have this quote of $19,600 for a BASE black '09 which now has a sticker of $33,000. No moonroof, ugly 16" wheels, non metallic paint($550 extra), no foglights, 210hp/5spd auto, pretty base car. I don't know, I did not get excited.

My local dealer who I love has one '09 left, it's a Nocturne Blue 2.0T XWD. This was more like it, semi loaded and with a $38k sticker. It has about 3k demo miles and there is nowhere to go from the $22,500 he is offering it to me for.

There was one other car my wife considered from my recommendations(Impreza GT, which was last years WRX auto, 2010 Fusion SEL). The Hyundai Sonata Limited. The Limiteds are nice and easy, they are all uber loaded with dual zone climate control, power seat-both heated, moonroof, leather, 17" wheels, dual exhaust on the V-6. Oh yeah, and they don't charge extra for metallic paint. Your only choices seem to be nav and 4 or 6 cylinder.

So we went for a test drive, because what if she liked the Sonata better? It would be easier to have our pick of Sonatas and Hyundai gets stronger every year, resale is better every year...the opposite of Saab.

So first the salesman thought he brought out a V-6. I could tell it was a 4 soon after, but it helped us make a decision. My wife was like ummm no, this is too slow lol.

He fixed his mistake and provided us with a silver on black leather V-6. She was a happy camper right away, nice engine note and I felt her give it some gas and giggle. 250hp V-6 it is. I would like to add that the 250hp V-6 seems to match Saabs 2.0T in gas mileage and both run on regular.

Now the V-6 Limited was about $26k MSRP. They only had nav cars and jokingly had a market adjustment add on of $2k. This made the car $31k with all the options it had. Pricey for a Hyundai. I was offered the car for $22k(8 miles-new), and if they lower it by $1000 this weekend or I find a NON GPS car and they beat the $22k, we will buy it.

Why?

It was very well put together. All the materials, the leather, the touch points, everything was far richer and better assembled than the Saab. I read an edmunds review that said it was Lexus-like inside the way the Camry should have been. The exterior, clean, non offensive, nothing stand out, but not a single bad angle, looks nice with the metallic paint, 17" wheels, and dual exhaust. These are things only to be said about an Aero or XWD 9-3 for close to $40k.

Ahh but what about safety? Don't play that here either, the Sonata had all the airbags, the crash test ratings, and had standard stability control.

The engine, well the 250hp V-6 was handily more powerful than the 2.0T and with 0-60 in the mid 6's it nearly matches a 2.8T Aero...Again, on regular though it only has a 5spd auto.

Then of course there is the warranty. That is nice. It use to be one of the only reasons to buy a Hyundai. Not anymore. Did you know they have quadrupled market share in just 10 years? Just watch out for them in the next 5 :)

So the Sonata had everything the Saab had so I found it hard to imagine how Saab's could command there MSRP. THe Sonata made for a better Saab than the Saab did.

Am I the only one who felt this way? Not today. There was plenty of traffic at the dealer today(number 13th highest volume in the country). I saw an couple in a Volvo S60R come in, test drive, and sit down for negotiations on a new suv. We also saw a couple in '01ish Saab 9-3 vert, they too were talking numbers on a new Hyundai.

What does this whole thing mean?

Part of me wants Saab the corporation to live long and prosper. The other part of me wants this company to be put out of it's misery for making average products at above average prices.

We, the enthusiasts have our C900's,SPGs, Aeros, Viggens, things like that. Saab is not going to give us what we want anymore. We still have our fun quircky used cars from 10-40 years ago. We get to keep that. The new 9-5, it is not going to be what you want, it is going to be 3500-3800lbs, $40k-50k, and not as cool as the 5dr 9000 your father passed down to you that he bought new in 1993.

So where do you go if you want a new car? I am not the person who buys the most popular car(hello, I bought Berettas). I will not own a new Accord, Camry, Corolla, things like that.

I appreciate companys that are a bit off the bullseye, cars that not everyone accepts, but the people in the know appreciate them for quality, design, or value.

So for me, my new Saab will be a Hyundai.

Let the fanboi shit fest begin. Might I add before that I have bought a new Saab in the past year, been in Saabs for two decades and had at least two in the family at any one time? Nah.

I find it impossible to understand everything you write in a post lately lol(Rafal, not Palmer).

It's not like every Saab owner should buy a Hyundai. I mean BMW's would be nice, but I am disgusted by the prices you see on the showroom floor. Even a pleather 328i with 10k miles is OVER $30k. Two many lowly 3 series have $40-50k stickers. Same can be said for Audi.

Saabs use to offer a lot of bang for the buck. I am not seeing bang for the buck in anything Euro aside for the CC 2.0T and a couple of other minor exceptions.

I'm just saying.

Your hairy arms make Hyuindiunndaiz the obvious choice.

No, really though. Good luck with the new appliance car.

:)

Also, I resent the implication that only a "saab fanboi" would not like this car.

And how is the GM'ified 9-3 SS 2.0T not an appliance car? Too many people think it got worse and worse after the C900 anyway. So lets not be hypocritical.

How is your wife's TL not anymore of an appliance car than mine's soon to be Sonata?

And I have hairy arms, but at least I don't shave my hands.

Why would it be full of BS? You seem confused on how things work.

And I make plenty of spelling errors, get over it. I still find your posts hard to read so you can put up with my spelling errors :)

Just wait until you are out of school for over 5 years. In my field I communicate visually more than I write, it destroys your grammar/spelling.

#17 ·
Oh, and you are on a SAAB forum.

Expect a shit fest.
I did. I knew it when I started. But I find it more fun to counter the BS attempts to minimalize points made that may come my way. Fact is fact, opinion is opinion and I had both to say.

I will also reply the shit out of this thread, so I am also ready to watch people bitch about that too. :)

Cars features are great, no argument there. My only real complaint is that the car is fugly... fugly and bland. That's not the most important aspect of a car, of course, but I value it. I don't know if there's a more generic looking car on the market.

Looks like a nice deal you're getting though, and I hope that their quality has picked up since last I rode in one. Seems to me they wear out pretty quick on little things, plastic trim, small convenience moving parts. Not like engine failure, just creature comfort type things.

#19 ·
There, that is an opinion. Fugly and bland are too different things. Even without having a fancy design degree I can say clearly there is nothing offensive about the Sonata, but also nothing special. It is bland. But opinion can come into play that the same could be said for a 2.0T as well.

I am not talking about the Hyundai of even 5 years ago. I am talking about today. Todays Hyundai is far more reliable than Saab. Again, that is fact.

My rant wasn't just about me liking Hyundai, it was about Saab missing the boat and not being competitive. If you feel another car company is a good example besides something like the Sonata, then by all means share it.

I'm tired, and half in the bag.

Basically, 16k for a 4 year old car with 62k on it and a 100k warranty (not only CPO cars, that's for everyone) is far from "top dollar", considering MSRP for it was 38k.

I'm happy with what I paid, and I'm also happy about the fact that I did not buy a NEW car. Buying new cars is stupid.

You can get just what you want out of a used car if you do work.

Besides, you were the one who brought up my wifes TL, not me.

Enjoy your beige korean camry/huyudiaz, I'm going to bed.

To rip off a nice article...

I hate the fact that cars like Hyundai and Lexus are best sellers, and the fact that Saab is going out of business.

Used vs New, you always do get better bang for the buck, almost. New Saabs for $19k are next to CPO 07's for $20k lol.

I bring up the TL not to debate it's merits as a car. You said good luck with the appliance car, and the same could be said of an Acura.

Buying a new car with a $31k sticker and decent future resale at $22k is not much of a gamble as used 09's are the same $22k.

Here is a fact. If you want a new car, or a demo, an 2009. It is sad the skimpy pickens' if you want some power, options like the ones mentioned, decent handling and looks. An boring Accord or Camry is about $30k and nothing from germany is under $30k.

So if you are not going to do CPO(my wife drove 25k miles last year, we really wanted to do new and get a full 100k warranty), and you are going to buy NEW, what great sedan would you buy for your wife at under $25k? This was my list:

-Jetta TDi
-Impreza GT
-09' Legacy GT(we hate the '10, demos only)
-Fusion SEL
-Sonata Limited
-Volvo S40(demos only)
-Saab 9-3

Ok, first off, I don't, and will never buy new. Ever. I don't even consider it.

Why do you buy a new car? Why the hell would you limit yourself to that when you can get a used car that blows all the new ones out of the water, for 10k less?

It makes no sense at all, given the amount of information at our fingertips, you can get exactly what you want, for the price you want if you spend some time.

As for the whole "appliance car" thing...come on man.

Really?

What would you rather drive?

A 2004 TL, or a new Sonata.

Be totally honest.

#29 · (Edited)
I want a used genesis. Since the day they came out I have always said I wanted a used one.

Always. And I'm going to wait. I say in 3-4 years I see myself owning one.

That's a far cry from a 2009 sonata.

Also, again. What would you rather drive? A 2004 TL, or a 2009 sonata?

I'm not saying my TL is some paragon of awesomeness, but come on now.

I too would snag a used one, say $23k in a couple of years in a heartbeat. It's not that far of a cry. The Genesis is kind of anonymous looking, borrowing from 2-3 other cars, but still tasteful. It offers all the equipment and luxury and build quality expected out of the normal cast of characters in it's class, and even a couple of extras. It makes for a good value.

Yep, same could be said for the Sonata.

I am not talking about a cloth GLS with 15" hubcaps. Go to your dealer and sit in and drive a V-6 Limited. The wood trim, leather, dual zone climate control, chrome, dual exhausts and nice wheels make a very different impression than the other models which make up most that you commonly see.

#33 ·
I like the Genesis coupe track pack. Packed a nice little punch and fit like a glove.

Basically, Hyundaaweoi has had better management than Saab and I believe nobody will argue with you on that point.

*My opinion is go for the Subie, it's got more of a personality. I like personality. And my opinion is that the Genesis is the only good hyundaiower right now. I think that'll change in the future, but right now, I only like the Genesis. /opinion

#36 ·
Subaru is another example of doing things right compared to Saab. The only problem is the 2010 Legacy is trying to be an Accord and got BIG(fact) and UGLY(opinion) so my wife didn't want it.

This is all true, but it's a NEW CAR, and buying new is a WASTE OF MONEY.
You still have not countered my points. What is bad about a new car, it's depreciation and buying power that hurt new. Correct?

Well if I am getting as much as $15k off some of these new cars, I am getting the same buying power as used, and also skirting the depreciation. It will depreciate, but more at the MSRP than at the price I paid. So if the NEW car costs LESS than the used one of the same make and model, I am not seeing the negative.

#37 · (Edited)
What? You are not choosing the cars with the mythical 15k off or whatever.

You are choosing the cars that sell for sticker, and counting on the idea that the resale might be good down the road. Nope, not going to happen. It's a fact.

And I'm saying you can get everything you have in your future Kamry for 5-8k less, in say, oh, I dunno...a TL, AND still have a warranty. 5-6k is a nice chunk of a down payment on a house.

Saabfanboi nonwithstanding (me), buying new cars is dum.

No two ways about it. Sorry.

You can buy your hyauindia or whatever, and I wish you luck, but personally...it seems to me like you might be gloating about it, and I really don't want to hear it given the current situation with my favorite car brand.

Now I'm going to bed.

That leaves only one conclusion then.

Fiat Abarth 500 SS.

No, really I don't have any good ideas to add to your rather thorough "arguments" earlier. I will applaud you for not going all SUV or Minivan, as sometimes tends to happen with the lady in the household these days.

My wife says, she will never own a Minivan and most likely not an SUV either. She will be doing the euro-station wagon thing to cart around our maximum of TWO children coming in a couple of years.

so when your friends ask you what kinda car you just bought, do you proudly tell them 'a nice little hyundai', or, 'a nice liil sedan' ?? Just wondering.

i understand your argument about re-sale value - but all that says to me is that you're looking forward to getting rid of it.

That, and how many 9k's, SPG's, etc, have you been excited about its re-sale value? Stupid question? Probably, but I dont ever remember a Saab i was excited about selling - broke 'ma heart every time.

I am fine saying Hyundai. It has less and less of a bad sound to it, even common folk know that they are building good cars, same folks that heard Saab is going down the tubes.
I have driven both a new Hyundai and a new Saab. How many people here who may comment can say the same thing?

Your comment about resale value might just show you have not been bent over yet buy spending closer to $20k on a used car to find out it is worth $8k to trade 6 months later.

Saab resale?
The Viggen broke my heart and made me happy at the same time. Nothing is irreplaceable, even my Viggen. Lets not put the pussy on a pedestal.

#48 · (Edited)
no i havent been bent over yet - cause I never buy new cars, and probably never will.

There are good deals out there right now. But I just cant handle the devaluation once its driven off the lot. Was just giving you the business about the Hyundai. Doesnt relly look any different than any other mid-size sedan out there. They're all pretty much one in the same now.

not putting the pussy up there, just saying that we get attached to the saabs for a reason, and I couldnt see a big car guy like yourself getting all attached to a hyundai, and upset if it came time to sell it - but iot sounds like thats not what you need out of this car.

I didn't say I got bent over buying new, I got bent over on our USED CPO Saab.

I am a car guy, that is why I have the cars I do. My wife, she wants something she likes to look at, but most importantly likes inside and has some power. Will we be upset selling it in 3-5 years? Nope. Are we happy to be rid of her Saab, yes. She wants a '55 Chevy in a couple years to cruise with. Will that be the same kind of car owning experience for her? No.

#51 ·
I don't get it. Do we have a say in the car buying process?

#52 ·
Whose buying process, mine? Well there is input, I did put it out there, to come up with a good, new or demo sedan, lux items like the ones mentioned and could be had for under $22k. The moral of the story is how uncompetitive the new 9-3 is.

Puts on flame suit. Hello, Saab forum. Here is a non-Saab. I know you will all hate it, because you have below average word comprehension. I use my eyes for a living! Yes it is fugly and bland, but the same could be said for your modern Saab! Let's face it, every Saab in the last 16 years has been a disgrace. AMIRITE?! Your hands are smooth. Why don't you like my Sonett-uh? It has a Saaby name! You have your opinion, but I am entitled to my better opinion. Korean V-6 engines make my woman giggle with pleasure. Korean four cylinder disappoint her giggle zone!! Even Subaru is doing better than Saab now. Have you guys seen the new Legacy? OMG ugly! Frankly I don't understand why everyone doesn't buy a Hyundai -- there are some great deals out there. No wait aren't Kias cheaper? Yeah they're ugly but who cares, my local dealer (fucking awesome people btw) can get me a Rondo for $18,000 off sticker -- FULLY LOADED!!1!!1! Oh wait that's kind of a minivan, and THE wife says she will NEVER own one to cart around our maximum of TWO hairless chihuahuas. We were going to get something from the retriever family, but they are just so big and slow, the power to weight ratios are awful, and my vacuum cleaners already have it hard enough. The chihuahuas are lightweight for THE wife to carry, hypo-allergenic, cheap to feed, and have a big aftermarket for sweaters. Believe me, I shopped around. Just this morning I ordered a set of used carbon fiber dog bowls. I know you guys hate CF but I got a good deal!!!!!

So anyway, I'm tired and heading to bed. Let's start a Hyundai/Kia club, drive to our local Saab dealer (fucking awesome people btw) and leave a giant Seoul patch of burning rubber in front of their service department! WARRANTY FO' LYFE.

Takes off flame suit. Notices the new hole in the knee and the old patches from years of heavy use. Wonders if a new (used) one can be found on CL for a good price.

I don't have time to get all the way through this thread, but jesus is it funny.

Jameson expects a shit-fest, so he continually provokes it. Make a half-assed comment, get a four paragraph reply justifying his decision.

Who, exactly, are you trying to convince here? Because it doesn't sound like it's any of us.

Funny the cover story for fortune this month is all about Hyundai aned made me take notice ( we all need to choose a new "current brans I guess)...http://money.cnn.com/video/fortune/2009/12/29/f_hyundai_success_story.fortune/

The company is dong some good things, ( something you can;t say about saab since GM took over.)

In any event Jameson I am not so serious about getting a car if you want my discount if that will put you over the edge for the Saab have at it just let me know.
