Can anyone help diagnose this?

My cousin was looking for a sub $3000 coupe. This is local.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998...Cars_Trucks&hash=item19bf86528a#ht_500wt_1182

It only overheats going uphill(I take that as when under strain) and has had the waterpump and thermostat replaced.

Obvious culprit, the rad? Is there an easy way to diagnose a bad radiator(i.e. clogged-since it's not leaking)?

Oil is said to be clean and clear, so that would rule out head gaskets which are $$$.

They will sell me the car for $2250 and its immaculate. If I had a diagnosis and knew it was under $750 to make right, I would hop on it.

Don't want to buy it open ended.

TIA.

No oil mixing with coolant does not rule out blown headgasket(s). That would still be my guess since it isn't an uncommon occurance with those cars.

or somebody poured 4 bottles of stopleak into it and completely plugged the radiator. and yes, it's easy to diagnose. if the engine is hot and the radiator is cold, the radiator isnt working right

Headgaskets is my fear and a deal breaker. Its not cheap on that car.

If it's just a radiator, than I would pick this car up.

From reading, bad head gaskets on Northstars almost never show in the oil. Sounds like we should walk from it.

Too bad. If it was about $2600 fixed, it is a damn clean car.

there are always plenty of good-looking grand prix gtp coupes and they are cheap. i'm no fan of gm cars of that vintage but at least with the poncho you can prolly get cheaper junkyard parts.

the 3800 engine is allegedly bulletproof. my dad's bonneville sse begged to differ...

i had a coupe de ville 1991 with 39k miles and it was very reliable. og owner was my bro-in-laws dad and it was a gem. errbody loved riding in the soft and quiet living room.

a guy offered me $3,000 for it so i sold it and got the escape limited.

He is coming from a Bonneville. He wanted something smaller, an Integra, Eclipse or Celica. He is young, plays guitar and sings in a band-still concerned with what the ladies think.

He had it in his head that girls would be into a 13 year old Integra. I explained those are chick cars lol.

So the Accord V6 Coupe is at least reliable but more substantial and a bit more gender neutral. I have 3 for him to look at this week for under $3500 with about 100k and from '98-01.

He wants a 2dr, and think about cheap and reliable to maintain. Audis are not cheap to maintain.

Jap fits the bill.

That is exactly the same symptom I had on my daily driver, a 2002 Chevy Impala with the 3800 engine with 248,000 miles.

Installed a "gently" used radiator, and the problem is resolved.

The 3800 is a lot easier to deal with. The Northstar, unless I know exactly what it is, can be costlier and harder to diagnose.

My Spidey sense is telling me to move on.

GTP gets my vote.

If he's concerned with what the ladies think, a GTP is a slick rig. Sure ain't no El Dorado though.

The 3800 is a pimp motor. Yeah, you get a lemon here and there, but overall, its a very good motor that you can pound the snot out of and makes good power, 'specially with a huffer on it.

I second that - those Caddy's are nothing but problems and are slow.

Standard Headgasket job includes heli-coil the block to replace the threads which WILL pull out with the head bolts......

FYI - NORTHSTAR = JUNK (yes they are WAY better then when they first started using them, but it's still a turd.)
