Alright I picked up a 2001 9-3 Viggen 5dr with a blown motor for cheap...

Car has 65k and I am building it... Already got my LSD installed, finishing putting the motor back together this weekend with forge pistons, got pretty much everything to drop the GT30 and will have that in before its on the road...

My question is... the car is black and needs to be painted as the previous owner did not take car of the outside at all....

Should I repaint it black which would be very easy to do... Or take everything off and paint it arctic white? I think a white viggen would be sexy as hell but just really don't know...

Or is there another color I should consider?

So I decided I would do a poll and see what other people thought would be a good move... give me some input?

Keep it black but clear it? All of my favorite cars have been black so I am bias but they were also mechanically the better.

There are a few threads on the other forum "Tunnys Black Cars" & "Tunnys Black Cars 2" ..

It just worked out that way since I have had about 50 cars and never really bought a car by color except for our current Saab.

Changing color is a beech. The hatch and jambs and think of all of that under hood acreage?

White has always been the one color I wish was available for Viggens. I don't really like fancy whites though, I just like a really clean and pure white.

5 versus 3 door hatch

Well in white it wont look incredibly stupid anyway since it's a 5 door hatch. :D

I get some pissed off but I bought it new in 1995 and we had it till last year so I am allowed an opinion?

In those first years .... well one big reason you couldn't get white easily was the dealers could not sell them. Yeah, I got our car at a very deep discount and as one dealer said over the phone ... "because my car is red not white".

The 3 door; they looked like a freaking egg. I nicknamed our car "Humpty".

The longer look of the 5 door takes the "egg" look away nicely. :)

White, dark windows, double-three spoke wheels, and you've got my dream 3-door.

Or do like I did with my ratty black C900, keep it a little ragged on the outside (I never really have to wash it) but put all the go fast stuff in it and just drive the hell out of it - with what you'd spend on paint you could build a pretty serious powertrain.

I'm going to have a serious powertrain... My dad has painted about 12 cars in the last couple years... so i'm going to do all the prep with him and then he'll end up painting it... so cost is going to be minimal either way...

But i'm not going to do all the work to have a extremely nice car and leave the outside looking rough...

I agree white would be absolutely killer if done well. Instead of Polar White, I'd go with Arctic White, and leave all of the gray trim, door handles, etc. as is unlike that boo boo MAACO Viggen that was on TSN a while back. Here's Arctic White on an XWD Aero:

However, if you did leave it black, you could make it unique by doing it in Metallic Jet Black ala the Turbo X. This would certainly cut down on labor as you could get away with leaving the door jambs, engine bay, etc. regular black. Source a black pearl grille and a set of TX wheels and you'd be set. Here's a quick Photoshop I did a few years back on my car with just TX wheels, but you get the idea:

In the end though, my vote goes to Saab's newest color that I doubt any of us have yet to see in person, but would just be over the top cutting edge, Sunset Red.

as far as color change i was going to keep the engine bay black... painting up to the where the fenders bolt to the body (there is a nice edge there to stop at) and painting the radiator support and all the front pieces...

and yes I would keep all the trim and door pulls the regular color which on the viggens is more of a grey than a black...

I do like that sunset red color too... but white is just hot... and i had thought about doing some other vaariation of black as well...

Oh and the wheels i'm planning on running for now are a set of bbs rk1's in gun metal grey or maybe more of a graphite grey if I go with black so it doesn't blend as much... maybe next year updating to 18's

Color change will be costly, if it's done right. If it's not done well, it will chip, show in places and just not look right. Go black again, but this time through a metallic flake in. It will help with hiding swirls, flaws, etc as the car ages and weathers in the future.
