Painting The Felt Door Cards.

Hola.

So instead of trying to track down a complete set of NG900 black door panel (felt) inserts, Im going to try and paint the original ones that are in my car now. Has anyone ever tried using Spray Can Fabric Paint??? I found some locally, but have never used it, nor know anyone who has.
The door inserts in my car are tan right now. I want to make them black - to do the Talladegga/Aero look. I already dyed my floormats from tan to black, and they look great. I also pulled out the front door speaker covers and painted those black as well. And either this week or next, Im pulling the tan headliner and re-doing it 'hopefully' in a vintage vinyl textured black headliner (think classic Mustangs).
I would like to re-cover the felt door inserts, but seems to be a little too much trouble with those clips it has to hold them in the door card (makes the door insert too thick to fit back properly). So I guess painting them with the fabric paint is the only way to go. Unless I can submerge them in a vat of dye. And by vat, I mean my girlfriends kitchen sink... haha.
And by the way, trying to track down a set of 4-door black inserts is next in line trying to find a viggen kit. suck city.

I also just purchased a 9-3 spoiler, and am going to color match it to the car as well. Guess Im going talladegga style. Anyone got any tips on painting the sideview mirror caps??

also found some how-to's on YouTube. Wow. This will be a lot easier than I thought. This video/link has me wondering if I should just go for it and paint my seats too. Been looking for black 9-3 seats, and this ust seems so much easier and cost effective. Though, im willing to accept a 'decent' look to the door cards, I dunno how much Im willing to trust this stuff with painting all my seats! I would love to see one in person after being painted, just to know...

I went ahead and ordered two cans of flat black to do the door cards in - we'll see how those turn out, and then maybe give the seats a try if it turns out nice.

I have a set of black felt inserts from my red car interior that I can part with. The inserts are fine, PM if you are interested.

I was going to use the whole door panels in my new car but I found '00 9-3 full leather door panels at the u-pull for a total of $50 for all four so I snagged those instead.

Dude, that fabric paint from a rattle can...no thank you!

Seriously, it will turn the stuff a different color, but its going to look like a janky-ass job for sure. I would never ruin a set of door cards (and definatly not seats) with that shit.

I did this to my 900 before I swapped out the entire interior for a black car.

It look pretty good. People who saw it in person commented it was nice. The fabric became all cruncy, not solft anymore. It covers well, but changes the properties of the fabric.

I pulled off a door card once as well, but never tried to put it back on (spare one). I thought at the time that I'd never get it back on "just right". Painting was easy as I just masked it all off, and any overspray is easily taken care of with a magic eraser.

Here's a few pics:

The original thread where I put them is here:

But the images no longer work from cardomain. I rehosted the two above so you could see. The second image is of the tweater, but I thought might be a little more close up for the fabric.

One more thing, they were now felt magnets! Now that they were black, lint and stuff showed up more easily, and I think the texture (crunchy) helped it to gather more lint and crap.

Its that crunchy feel that tBoy describes that just sucks in my opinion. Like I said, you can make it look nice in a photo, but in my opinion you're ruining the fabric.

Real dye is the way to go.

wow. thats helpful. thanks a ton for putting up those pics.
I was getting kinda worried with this whole spray can thing. Ive never had any good outcome from anything out of a spray can.

Im definitely not going to do the whole interior with it for sure then.

I might be ok with it just on the door cards - you know, the whole crunchy thing - but not on my seats.. Actually, I think I'll just dye them. I dont want to ruin the fabric. Thanks for the tip on that by the way. I didnt think i could use the same dye that I did on the floormats.
May just have found a whole set of black cards now, thanks to this forum. Awesome. Will keep you guys updated on this project.

Ok guys, thanks to this forum, I found full set of black door cards. Awesome.

Im really glad I asked you guys about the fabric paint - couldve made a big mistake there...

I would love to have a set of black leather seats from another 900 or 9-3 - but may just have to settle with the tan cloth. We dont have any sort of u-pull's around here with anything European in it. So aside from driving across country to pick some used ones up, I may have to go the custom route for the seats. Though, I think I'd rather spend that kind of money on a Koni kit than black seats.
