painted valve cover

haven't posted in a while. thought i'd post a little eye candy. i snagged a spare valve cover from a 9000 in the pick-n-pull. i decided against powdercoating because all the chips i looked at seemed to have an uneven finish. i'm planning on painting my car Subaru 37J metallic white, so i sprayed this valve cover in a high temp white. painting the letters was a pain in the balls, but looking back i realized a skateboard wheel would have worked perfectly.

i think this looks pretty cool and i have yet to see anyone do a white one. but the one i pulled off is already stripped and the tab by the PCV hose and the lettering is shaved off. going to polish it out and do a cool stencil pattern over it with a sandblaster!

Looks nice man.

I just repainted my valve cover black with a primer to touch up the rough spots. The rubber seal that goes in between the valve cover was a little bit of a bitch in order for me to get everything lined up, but I was told if you take off the valve cover and put it back on and don't have an oil leak you should be golden (also the rubber gasket can get stuck to the valve cover and the engine).

The white looks nice! but unfortunately it's not what I'm looking for.

My engine them is blue and red, the tranny was repainted silver for the rebuild though.

What have others tried for colors? And what type of DI's did you use black or red?

Powder coated my valve cover and charge pipe in silver vein last fall.

since the original finish is powdercoat, sandblasting does basically nothing.. i'd say the best prep is to strip it with aircraft remover. best to scrape the large surface areas. then wash it down with dish soap to remove the stripper (cuz it burns like hell) then scrub off the excess paint with a wire brush. then a hot cycle in the dishwasher with no soap as it corrodes aluminum quite a bit. then i wipe it down with rubbing alcohol and lightly heat it with a propane torch before spraying on high temp paint.

substantially easier than going the route of polishing. i'm still trying to completely smooth all the surfaces of this other cover before i can even start the polishing. and after sandblasting it yesterday, i'm finding a good amount of corrosion in the bolt hole grooves. gonna take alot more time than expected.

figured i'd post some more pics of current updates and projects..

here's the other valvecover i'm working on. the dipstick mount is shaved, along with the lettering. just need to resurface it a little more, then i can start polishing it and hot tank it for install. btw, anyone know how to remove the chain guide inside these things?

and here's a shitty little pic of the new exhaust. got tired of the sidepipe, so i installed a 14" case 3" magnaflow with a very nice rolled stainless angle tip. it's 3" all the way back without a cat. spits some gnarly flames according to my VW friends i blasted by on the freeway. haha

and here's the 9-3 grille i dechromed, shaved, and color matched. along with the CSE front spoiler. i like how it has a bit more girth on the lip. it's not completely assembled and installed just yet. finished shaving the little saab emblem and paint this morning.

this is the 3" stainless suction pipe i did. it's kind of a temporary thing. i'm going to use the 4" aluminum suction pipe i made for a holset when i get around to fitting everything still need to weld a recirc fitting on it for the larger diverter valve. this includes an air-water IC setup which probably won't be done for a few months.

Skate Board wheel for what?

im guessing to role the paint on but i might be wrong

yes, skateboard wheel for applying paint to the lettering. i found a wide longboard wheel in the garage and it would have worked alot better then a shitty foam brush.

and i'm just using a bracket to hold the charge pipe up for now. but the plate idea is pretty good! i might go ahead and do that!

bahhh.. i don't worry much about my filter getting wet seeing how i live in AZ. and it's a damn nice filter. in all the independent tests i've come across, it filters as good as a paper filter with very little restriction. it's pretty over engineered, despite looking like a simple cone filter. haha

and btw, the shiny, fancy, good looking suction pipe was probably cheaper than anything that looks like a piece of fencing!

two T-bolt clamps: $free
2.5-3" black silicone coupler: $5
22" of T304 3" stainless: $8.83
aluminum mounting bracket: $free

it looks good, sounds magnificent, reduces spiking (go figure), and frees up a bit of power! can't go wrong for less than $20!

When this topic was originally active, my valve cover was in the shop to be powder coated. Pickup it up last Thursday and put it on the car today. The color is called "Silver Vein", the lettering on the vc and the DIC was coated "Cirrus White", same color as car body. Thought I would share the results . . .

Car is now about ready for Carlisle, just a final washing and detailing middle of next week.

To my eye, all I saw when in the engine compartment was white fender covers, white front sheetmetal crossmember, grey metal engine pieces, black sound deadening material on firewall, black valve cover and the original red DIC. So I decided that I wanted to keep to a White / Grey / Black compartment theme. So I changed the color of the DIC, to Cirrus White and installed that. Then to change the appearance, just a bit, I went with the Silver Vein on the valve cover and decided that the contrast of the lettering in the white could be sharp looking. At this point, I really like the end result.

Currently, I am powder coating the charge pipe in Cirrus White. Hopefully it will give me the final appearance that I want. I think that will be about all that gets done to the engine compartment.
