I'm probably late on this information.., but while replacing my Intercooler I noticed a lot of oil residue inside the old one.

I believe this will lead to inefficient cooling, especially considering the higher temps of this oil out of the PCV. But, I also believe this disturbs the airflow rate as more of it, get's into the Intercooler.

As every little bit helps, I'm looking into buying an oil catch can somewhere. Anyone else using one? Post results of my findings...

i had talked to erp about running one awhile ago....but really didnt get into it...basically i think its a good idea and the can be had cheap on ebay. im just not sure about the install...

i had this setup on my 91 900t, pretty easy to make one, all you need is an empty quart size paint can ( about a $2 item at home depot maybe less) some misc fittings and a length of hose, theres a web page with instructions out there somewhere, dont ask me where tho, lost that link long ago.

heres a pic, you can barely see it but its there, right behind the intercooler and the cone filter.

the 9-3 has a small catch underneath the intake manifold... i am probably going to take this out and clean it one of these days if i can get my hands in there

Oh yea...got it in already....it's a polished canister about a pint or so witha sight tube on the side.

Keeps that PVC blow by nice and dry going into the turbo inlet.

I'll post pics later...sorry about the delay.

keeps the blow-by oil from the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) out of the intercooler, and places where you don't want this to flow on the compressor side of the turbo.

the tank is supposed to keep the oil and pass the air. The cooler the air the denser the mixture; also the less oil to disturb the flow of the air, the more consistent the boost pressure.

You are forgetting the most important part of the PCV and oil blow by modification! Oil and fumes in your intake air drastically reduce the octane of your fuel and when youve got a tuned turbo charged car, we all know the importance of octane.

It's a JDM OIL CATCH TANK CAN GREDDY CUSCO ! RED
I did a search on EBAY....came with the tank and lines with clamps to install..

Your right, definately one of the driving factors ultimately the core reason for doing this. When I saw the oil residue in the IC I replaced, it really hit home.

This is an interseting post. Sorry I should reintroduce myself. Hi all.
I have not been on here for ages. Got caughtup in another Saab forum.

I have used this place well though. Fitted Blaque outs Viggen style aerial with his instructions. :D A while back.

Anyway I have a Viggen IC UNUSED and boxed in the shed. Getting some pipework for it this month. So fitting the catch can could be a good start to the project aswell.

My neighbour here in the UK has a 450HP Sierra Cosworth. The local specialist drilled his cam cover and fitted big pipes to the tank ect. Is this a poss for the Saab ???

I will try to get some pics up soon, but don't hold your breath.

I fitted a catch can this weekend. This was essential for me as I have been venting the PCV to the atmosphere for months and the engine bay was getting very dirty/oily. A few hours with a steam cleaner and everything is back to normal. My install is not complete (still supported with duct tape). I will vent the can to atmosphere and am currently looking for a suitable filter. These things are cheap (~$20-$30) and take only seconds to install. Only noticeable increase for me will be less oil in the engine bay :wink: Well worth the few dollars and minutes invested.

Tell me about it. I went on EBAY UK today and they were expensive then visited the US EBAY :shock: NO way $17 plus $15 deliverey. Man that is great. I wonder if I bought one and shipped it I would get import TAX :evil:

A catch can did wonders for my neighbours Cossie. It was also venting to the atmosophere lots of oil....

I shall be looking at one of these nect week after payday. Look forward to some shots..

Sorry to bring back a post from the dead, but DC, I was curious whether or not the catch can you installed had any internal baffles to keep the oil mist down.

I only ask because you are routing the line from your catch can back into your intake rather than venting it to the atmosphere, and thus if any of the oil that enters the catch can remains as a mist in the air, it would still find its way into your intake.

Sounds like you hating a little bit buddy.... but okay with me..

You can add a baffle or filter on the inside of the can on the return side as you like ....nothing more than glueing a piece of baffle mesh on the inside of the can.....or allow the weight of the oil to fall into the can and allow the air to pass thru as it does now. The trick is in the mounting of the can...and the wider the can the better.

Best to have the can straight up and down, so the weight of the oil falls in the can, and air passes through. The oil would have to be extremely hot to atomize into the air to pass thru.., but again a baffle is still a good thing.

Consider also that with the mounted angle and note that the return line is facing .. oil is not getting to the turbo inlet pipe from the can...as much as it would had I not used it. I did happen to noticed oil in the bottom of the can 3 days ago from the PCV blowby...and only have to unscrew the bottom to drain it. Either way it works. The site tube on the side lets me see how much oil.

On my next turbo upgrade...(soon I hope).., I'll note more from examining the inlet pipe, and intercooler hose.

This upgrade will help keep those boost temps from rising as much...in addition to proper turbo shielding..; wrapping exhaust manifold and spraying it with silicon..; installing reflective heat wrap on delivery pipe...(although I chose not to wrap my Abbott.., cause I like the style); and installing a blow-off valve...the rationale is all about keeping heat out of the boost.

Seldom use anything that doesn't work..and I have a whole lot of parts ..I have yet to put on..

I'm really sorry if I came across in a negative way, I didn't mean to at all.
I honestly think that the catch cans are a great thing to have, especially on a turbo car where more blowby occurs, and I was only curious if your catch-can had a baffle because you decided to route it back into the intake.
I wasn't sure how much of the oil mist would get sucked by into the intake vacuum, and I thought you would know since you've been running the mod for a while now.
I actually plan to do it myself pretty soon so that the new intercooler stays clean inside, and I preferred your method of routing it back into the intake for the purposes that the pcv system serves in helping with piston ring sealing.

I'm glad to hear it works the way you have it

its cool..., and should be simple to do...I've changed the line to stainless steel and have mounted my return on top of a Viggen inlet pipe instead of running it into the base of the inlet on the older NG's

The stainless looks pretty cool
