Oil Catch Can/Tank for c900

Okay, I have seen so many posts that are like "Yeah just put this this this and this here and then you got it." I was wondering if anyone has installed an oil catch tank on a c900. What I know is that I would remove the pcv breather thing from the intake pipe. Then run one line from the valve cover to the tank, then pop a filter on the other part of the tank. What do I do with the coolant line that runs to it, and what else should I look for?

I will probably buy a nice Chinese one on eBay for like $20.

Make sure when you plug coolant pipes you use something w/o threads on it and clamp it securely!

The catch tank you've got the right idea....hose from valve cover to tank, breather filter on tank.

Resurrect!

Okay so I installed my catch can, and a few things happened. First of all, I installed it with a filter on the end of the tank. This caused blowby under boost because the system relies on the pull from the turbo in the intake to vent the pressures. So then I hooked one line up to the valvecover, then the other line to the intake. This caused less, but still some blowby under boost. I could see oil splattered on the intake manifold from the dipstick.

What should I do? Is the catch can too restrictive for the system?

yeah its probably too restrictive, delorean had this problem with his car, it got so bad that the car was actually smoking quite a bit. might try replacing the stock breather elbow on the manifold with something larger, and running a larger diameter tube to your catch can. did you unplug the vacuum line that runs to the breather nipple on the valve cover? cause you should do that.

Yeah the oil catch tanks like sold on ebay accomplish nothing good and usually cause a lot of problems. Without the negative pressure in the crankcase the turbo return like dosent drain correctly and this causes the bearings on the turbine side to blowby very badly into the exhaust. A little oil in the intake tract never hurt anybody, But if you really want to decrease it research an aircraft air/oil separator that goes in-line (you still need to have vaccum on one side) and then has a very small outlet on the bottom for a "catch can". By the way, every saab 16v already has a air/oil seperator already built into the valve cover.

I've been wondering about this since my 82 8V turbo doesn't have the little hose from the crankcase breather (it was disconnected and loose so I pulled it and capped off the small outlet on the breather nipple), and only had the larger hose going back into the air filter box.

Would there be any benefit adding a device to collect and retain 'oil' that comes down the breather line(s) on a T8? The old air filter was really horridly clogged with oil residue when I changed it recently. I've been curious to work out whether the engine needs to have the small breather hose re-installed. Where it should run too is something I'm not sure about as I recall on my 83 turbo it didn't go to the throttle valve like it does on the n/a engines - instead into part of the EGR vacuum stuff which isn't connected to anything in my 82 turbo.

I'm a believer that some oil in the intake system isn't bad since it helps to keep the throttle butterfly lubed, but an over-supply of oil residue might be bad.

yeah, if you want your car to stop smokimng hook the stock PCV system back up. I had a catch can for a while and basically it did not work and made the car smoke... The stock system on the 16 valves really does work just fine, they only have 1 version on the C-900 cause they got it right the first time.

i've been running an air compressor $15 Husky brand oil/water filter in place of the stock line in my car for a while and have not had any issue.

i did this after noting that the stock hose was disintegrating. i did find a spare hose at a pick-a-parts yard that was in decent shape, but have not had any issue thus far with oil spraying out the dipstick, nor smoke in the exhaust.

well, actually, i do sometimes get a little smoke on start up, but i am still blaming that on my blown headgasket.

every body that puts a catch can on a c900 has a huge prblem with blow bye. I went through a quart of oil just doing one run under boost and had a huge mess under the hood not worth it. I just use a different hose fromn like home depot or something like that and have the coolant passages blocked off.
