Notchback hunting in philly this weekend?

I spotted this over on saabnet and in my quest for a reliable 900 it really sparked my interest:
"I stopped by Shorty-n-Dave’s U-pull-it (in king of Prussia PA) over the weekend and was shocked with my finding’s. At the back of the lot I found three notchbacks next to one another, an 85 black and (2) 86’s lt blue and rose quartz. Anyway, all of them were straight and in relatively good shape for being 21 and 22 y/o and were 5 speeds. The blk 85 had about 135k and engine slightly pulled apart. The lt blue 86 had 224k and had various spot’s of rust on it yet looked complete (had a trunk spoiler). The 86 Rose Quartz looked complete, 155k and not much body damage. Mind you all of them had sagging headliners, cracked dashes faded smelly interiors and the black and light blue notches had hood rot on the passenger side."

So does anyone want to come along with me this weekend to check them out? Im thinking about heading down saturday so if anyone wants to come along let me know. Oh and DIBS on the black one;)

well if they are IN the junk yard, you can pretty much forget about getting them from THIS junk yard :( I am friends with the owners of this place, so if anyone could get one out of there, I could, but if they don't have a title (which they generlly don't) they won't sell em to anyone....

If you want to go to shortys on Sat. we should do a grand tour of the philly area junk yards. Either that, or after shortys we could run out to morrisville and hit up the pair of junk yards there too, they also have a pair of good yards there that always have saabs.

well thats depressing to think that 3 notchbacks are just going to rot away over time. I suppose its worth a shot though, maybe a philly junk yard tour would be in order for this weekend.

Thats what I was thinking, perhaps Jeff could "persuade" them to find another 900 title and look the other way on this one. I just dont think I'm emotionally ready to give up on these notchbacks without a fight:lol:

I don't see why I couldn't apply for the title to the car as long as I had a bill of sale and it still has VIN tags. My father is doing essentially the same thing with a boat trailer, and I realize they are completely different vehicles, but he just needs to show proof of ownership and he has been able to apply for a new title.

I had a car where the owner had died, her widower sold me the car, but never got me the title, only way I could get the title was through a process called Garagemans Lien (its called different things in different states) essentially we claimed the car was towed, and no one claimed it, it went to "auction" and we got the title. Depending on the states a bill of sale alone will not be sufficient proof. I've seen many people with out-of-state bills of sale try to register a car with that and get turned away.

So after a bit of preliminary searching it seems like Penndot form MV-426B might be the one we're looking for, which is on the assumption they would actually sell us the car. All of this would be so much easier if they actually do have the title so I'm still hoping for the best.

well I dropped by today, there are indeed 3 notchbacks there. They apparently all came in on the same day from the same wrecker. Nothing else is known about them by the guy I talked to. they all had mabnuals and service records too. There is one black 85 8 valve, a blue 86 16 valve, and a rose quartz 86 16 valve. pretty sure all 3 were 5 speeds. All 3 are in good to excellent physical condition, the 85 had some rust getting started the other 2 were pretty much rust free.

I'm pretty sure you are still not going to be able to buy one whole though... I could try and talk to the dudes there and see if I could get one out for someone, but don't have high hopes... we do at least have the keys to 2 of the 3 there now ;) either of the 86's there would have made great cars for someone, it's a real shame they ended up there.

haha, we also just were able to look up (from the service records) who owned the black car. From some of the records, he was completely insane... Apparently, it was Dr. Robert A. Dye, a senior Economists for PNC financial services. Dudes plate number was RA DYE  fucking loon... Anyway he seemed to jet between Pittsburg and Lancaster pretty often with it till he sold it in 98.

Also from chatting with Jeff shore, the guy they came from was *probably* some dude in Exton who has a collection of vintage saabs, these were some of the first to go. He is going to try to find out more about what's remaining this weekend, we may make a run out there to see what the deal is and if there are any left...

If these were the ones he junked, I'm betting he still has some neat cars!

haha sounds like quite an adventure, and how the hell do you have keys to two of them?

How rusty was the black one, the guy who posted on saabnet said there was some rust on the hood but Im sure you did more investigating than he did. I hate to get my hopes up but I have serious notchback envy:cry:

Let me know if you are going back as I'd like to check these out if theres a slim chance we could get one out.

eh, the black one was rusty... could have used a hood and doors, nothing major at all, but it would be very bad in 2 years of normal driving if nothing were done to it.

the chance is beyond slim we'd be able to get them out, but eh... stranger things have happened! we have the keys cause they were sitting in their ignitions ;)

thats too bad the black one was starting to rust, but I suppose any of them would be better than none.

Are you going back to the junkyard this weekend or investigating the rest of the guys collection?

I'd go but i'm goin to don fatzingers place during the day and getting my monthly dose of Lancaster County ******* @ The Buck saturday night... (friend of mines racing his pickup in the diesel truck drags) We turned his one chip up to 230 over and have the other set at like 50 over so we'll see how 600hp does.
