Noisy fuel pump / loss of pressure **Updated - even more New Symptoms**

Only occurs after extending driving (and typically with less than 1/2 fuel tank, but not always). Seems to be OK for around town / less than an hour or so at highway speed.

Loud buzzing coming from the fuel tank and the car starts running out of fuel on the top end/when in boost

This mean my pump is going to konk out on me shortly, or is there something else wrong?

Year is 88.

If it's pertinent, I have a T-5 fuel rail and rising rate regulator (OEM saab 2.3 stuff) as well as red tops. Also, fuel lines were checked and fuel filter is new as of about 9 months ago... less than 3k miles on the filter.

I haven't noticed any variation with cornering, only with lower fuel levels and acceleration (when it starts to do it).

Is the pre-pump in the same housing assembly as the main pump?

its also a good idea to check the fuel pump relay, even if the fuel pump turns out to be the first issue, the stress (and heat) in the system caused buy the extra electrical load of a dying pump, will drastically shorten the life of the relay

Roger. I am planning to replace at least the pre-pump, so I will check that as well.

Is there any way to isolate the pre pump from the main pump without removing it from the tank, to see if it's working?

So, I changed out the pre pump with a new bosch unit today. If anything, the problem has gotten worse :confused:

Is it possible that I've killed my main pump by driving it too long with a less-than-adequate pre pump?

I also am planning to check fuses and relays for corrosion/damage/etc

kinda yes,, fuel pumps also use the fuel to act as a coolant,, it is possible that if its been dry for so long it overheated...

or it could just be that these parts are not 15+ years old, and there time is up

Oh, thanks for your valued input Craig ;-)

The SPG always makes it back. The amount of time, work and effort required varies significantly, however ...

Ehh, it's all done by feel anyway. Should be here in the morning. You really want me to post those pictures, don't you?

Should I start taking bets now on what I break when this doesn't fix the problem?

Might have to try that... although mine is the 9k aero style one (it's a 2.7bar as I recall, and the mounting is different)
