That video may "over simplify" that job a bit, it's actually pretty difficult in practice. I might recommend draining off some coolant and removing the heater hoses from the heater control valve at the firewall. Good chance those plastic pipes are pretty brittle and won't hold up to being muscled around to squeeze the alternator out

Thank you for the tip. We might go with draining the coolant route and removing the heater hoses. The parts from 4Wheelonline arrived early so we have plenty of time working on the 900.

Oh, you're in for a treat. This is one of the most strangely difficult jobs on a classic 900.

Removing the wires and un-tensioning the belts and undoing the single long bolt is all self-explanatory, but that bolt hits the firewall and is significantly too long to actually remove. The factory dropped the fully dressed engine into the car, of course, so didn't have to worry about that.

You have to loosen the engine mounts and physically tip the combined engine and transaxle unit toward the nose of the car until the long bolt will just barely clear. Once you do that, the alternator comes the rest of the way out easily.

I have a c900 turbo that is gutted and caged, and one of the nods to serviceability on it is an access hole on the firewall that lets the long alternator bolt come out between the pedals, and is normally plugged with a rubber grommet. I'd never cut into a decent street car to do that, but I really wish the factory had done it for us.

The wierdest part of this job is the bolts for the alternator mounting bracket and how all three of them require a different approach to loosen.
