ok - car at hand: 1986 900 SPG
Mileage: 166,xxx

MODS I WANT TO DO:

  • Pull a 2.1 Motor to use the block
Put a upgraded Turbo in - TD04 - T3/T4 something along those lines
LSD - only if/when the trans goes boom.... :p
Bigger clutch - stage 2 - only when the new clutch fails... most likely won't
Figure a way to set up 2 900 IC-ers as a dual set up.
MODS I PLAN TO DO:

  • Pull the motor and trans - rebuild motor
    Install Pre-APC pistons
2.3 Head - (ported and polished)
2.1 Intake - (ported and polished)
Air Intake - cone set up
Get Rhich to bore me up a TB :) (if pockets can afford it as a final step)
    Bigger Injectors
    3.0 Bar FPR
    Cat-Back Sports exhaust - 2.75" straight back with a sports cat/hollow cat
    AFR Gauge
    Turbo PSI Gauge
New bushings and motor mounts all around.
    The Thicker IC Piping

Alpine Stereo with all my toys from the 9000 subs too (for traction in winters  )

Did I miss anything?

Questions -
Breaks - What are my options for upgrading brakes? Rotor/Calipers
Suspension - Would adding SPG coil spring to JUST the front be silly? Currently the 86 has the basic 900 Turbo springs (sits higher - carries more)

1986 SPG upgrades that would really work.

(1) remove engine and rebuild, use ported 2.3L NA head with 2.3L NA intake cam and the 1986 2.0L exhaust cam (or find 1985 2.0L exhaust cam) Intake is optional, if you can find a 2.1L great if not don’t sweat it. Cone airfilter and 1990+ intercooler piping would help greatly. 9000 Intercooler wouldn’t hurt but anything better then a stock one if you’re going to use a T3/T4 to its fullest.
(2) Spend money on quality rebuilt bottom end, good rings and bearings, not just stuffing bearing and calling it a rebuild. I would stay with a 2.0L block and stay away from 2.1L ones (prone to pitting) Keep your compression ratio less then 8.6.1 for bigger boost numbers.
(3) Stage II or at least a good tweeked APC. #30 injectors and a RRFPR would be worth the extra $$$, BigBore throttle body is a given. Shave a couple pounds off your flywheel and go with a good clutch (IE ClutchMaster or Center Force) Or upgrade flywheel and use 9000 clutch but still shave a couple pounds. A AID from Group9 (new adjustable design) wouldn’t hurt either
(4) Ditch the 1986 tranny and find a 89 + tranny that can hold up to the power you are starting to produce, this will require changing over to an 1988 + shifter (easy swap) LSD is either going to be expensive to buy and even harder to find used.
(5) Update brakes to 88+ and use 9000 brakes (that’s B R A K E S) not breaks…. On the front, stainless brake lines would help 100%...

At this point you would have a contender, maybe in the 210-230 HP range, a MSD box or high voltage coil and some killer plug wires would be an added bonus. The gauges I would invest in would be A/F, Oil pressure and Boost…….
Of course the exhaust is a given, I would go with a full flow CAT to avoid any legal complications down the road.

Other possibilities:
Headstuds from Group9
Copper headgasket

Thanks Rhich - that is a nice help and makes for good consideration for my plans. On a side note, Taliaferro - how come they don't list any exhaust system for a c900 Turbo? If they do I can't seem to locate it. I just wanna price them out as an option. Anyone know where I could look for a good exhaust set up? Cheaper the better - and it neds to have a cat of some form...sadly.

ok - I now have a 2.1 Head and Intake for the SPG project - MAY have some #30 injectors too soon. I plan to aquire some pre-apc pistons from rhich still, then I think I'm going to pull the 2.0 and put it on a stand and tear it down - if the walls look good I will not take it to get honed. If it does it does. Then I'm gonna get a job - save up ALL the money I need - buy those parts and start assembling. Once I have the basic motor read to go - I'll take the 2.1 to get rebuilt, maybe a Stage II design - i may hafta talk to Rhich if i get a good job and can afford Rhich's quality. I'd love to get his stage II set up - but I'm too poor now to afford a decent price  But that's the update for now.

ok - well to give you all an update - I DID get a job, and a good one too. The cash is slowly building up now. Once I have $1,000 saved I'll start rebuilding. Right now I need to get those Pre-APC pistons from Rhich and borrow a cherry picker and pull my motor, buy an engine stand and start tearing it down. It's only a matter of time now. I want to have the car on te road and legal within a year from when I get the title in the mail. Anyone in the PA area good with body work and want to do some fender/1/4 pannel work for me? I'll pay/feed ya the best I can! Or better yet - offer my skills in trade for equal value of a job!

My biggest expenses are going to be the transmission and the paint - still deciding what color and things...

I intend to have this car in show car quality - and it will most likely be at many car shows to sport a few sponsers I should gain once i write a few letters (AutoMeter)(K&N) and w/e else I want :p 8)

Well - as sad as it is to say - I'l stripping my 86 SPG and junking what's left of the body. Today DeLorean and I found way more things wrong with it then I plan to fix. Below are pictures from today. The good news - I might be buying DeLoreans 89 SPG off of him and putting a pre-face style front and tail on it since I like the 86 body look anyways. So - there's the good and the bad - enjoy the pictures
