My CoPart 93 9000 Aero restoration project

Some of you may remember me some may not. I sold my 9k about a year and a half ago since a very shady shop, basically ruined my car, and I had to get new wheels quick.

I didn't want to start this thread until my auction was over. I didn't want other 9000 enthusiasts going into a bidding war with me.

I was dying for another 9k, my boyfriend wants to learn to work on cars, so I figured this was the perfect project!

It's hard to see but it almost looks like there is a burn mark on the back right corner of the roof. Anyone have any thoughts?

The interior..

The interior is very rough. My guess is the driver window regulator is out, because in the picture it's the only one rolled down... That plus the door panel is off.

Not to dispair though, I already found a MINT replacement interior, LOCALLY even!

I bought this 1993 Saab 9000 Aero 223k
My winning bid was $325
All I know about it is that it runs and drives.

I also found a front valance and various other bits of Aero trim local as well.

The car is right on the boarder of Utah, and i'm debating on trailer it back, or being adventurous and driving it.
What I plan on doing first, if I don't drive it back is. Drain fuel tank, change fuel filter, plugs and drop oil pan and clean mesh screen.
I guess I won't know exactly how good or bad it is until I get it this week.

Once I get this thing running correctly, than my only other plans are to tint the windows, doing a full DP and Exhaust system, and a JZW tune.

Going to strip out that interior top to bottom and give it a complete bath! I'll post lots of pictures and updates. I didn't think this car should ever even go close to the crusher!

That looks like quite a project to take on! But I'm glad to see someone take interest in saving it rather than scrapping it. For that paint I would hit it with some TR3 Resin Glaze, you can pick it up at most local auto parts stores. It'll bring that paint right back I've used it on lot's of oxidized finishes and it does wonders. I'll have to keep my eye on this thread and see how it progesses. :)

I agree there needs to be a Colorado meet up. SPG and I are close I know that Banman your aways from us but that doesn't matter. Lets make it happen.

#8 ·
Yes, let's make this happen! It would be great to have all of us be a mini Colorado network of knowledge. I'll PM you guys my FB info if you like.

My concern would be if that window doesn't go up right now thats going to be a very very cold drive. With what it looks like I would still take a trailor with you just to be safe. Did they say way was wrong with it?

#11 ·
Nope, no info other than it runs and drives and moves under its own power. I'm sure I could rig the window to stay up on the way home. Problem with trailering it right now is our mountains are getting hammered with snow this week....

#12 ·
I would just be concered with driving it back in this snow and something going wrong with it then your really screwed.

I'm going to have to agree with Spartan on this, I would trailer it back if you can. The window status is unknown but there's also a lot of other concerns like if it would have any problems driving, if the wipers/washers work to keep the windshield clear, how good the tires are, etc. If it was warmer weather out I would say go for it but right now it's best to trailer it.

It was on CoPart. The car was donated to charity.

I agree with all the above. The tires are actually in damn good shape from what I can see... I wish it where summer time right now.

Cool I might look on there also never hurts to have an extra Saab for that kinda money so its just CoPart.com?

#17 ·
Correct. I had to use an auto broker and pay him a fee as well. Than there is a Copart auction fee that's based on the amount. I think the thing with all the fees will roughly be $700.

This car was on there for months and would be reposted because no one bid on it.

Holy shart! So the fees are more than your bid?! Not as screamin' good a deal now at twice the money. Don't get me wrong--the body looks very clean and I hope it is--it should buff out really well.

Maybe Im crazy I don't really see this car as that beat up. I mean there are a lot of unknowns on the car thats forsure. The interior is trashed but that shouldn't cost to much right way I mean a new door panel and seat covers if you want then a really nice cleaning. The body looks really straight so thats a good thing. With a good polish I think you can get some shine back. The only thing that would concern me is the fact you didnt get to test drive it to see how bad it is. There is the chance that the motor has issues that would require a lot of work. And when you add in all the cost from the auction the great value seriously takes a hit. I bought my 9kCS for 800.00 and its ran like a champ for over a year now. I don't judge on price just for me I wouldn't pay almost 800 bucks without seeing the care in person. There are always cheap Saabs on CL.

Assuming the drive train needs just what I have in mind, which is fluids and a timing chain, head gasket, valve gasket, etc. Than it's all interior, which i've found. Shouldn't be too bad. I'll be really happy if I get it and it runs half way decent.

You will have to keep an eye on their site. 9000's come an go, but almost never in Colorado.

There's lots of Saabs on there. I saw a 04 9-3 ARC with some suspension damage go for $1,150 yesterday. It was in Denver, there was a 900 SE on there no one was bidding on, not sure if it's still up.

You'll have to take some pictures of it in the snow if we still have any when you bring it back! I took this one of my Aero today, we don't have a whole lot here but we have a little bit.

^^ They've already picked it up with the forklift about 100 times, 1 more won't hurt, get the $30 worth and save your back. I stopped buying from them cuz they lost so many titles (and yeah, they still keep your $ even if they lose the title)

And I want to make it clear Im not putting this purchase down I Like the car and I think you got a nice project if it runs and drive Like the said. I think the paint will buff out nice and the interior just needs a good cleaning and some parts but it will be worth it. I personally just have problems buying a car sight unseen but Im excited to see the build taking place.

So the Red Aero fell through. There was no way I was driving 4.5 hours one way and 4.5 back last weekend in the weather we where having. Than late Sunday came around and I had the flu.

I nabbed this on C.L today, in the cheap.

The interior is in decent shape, defiantly have to do the headliner on the sunroof, maybe one day I will find a dash in better shape.
Everything works with the exception of low beams, and one window. Oh wait, the heater core needs replacing and a blower motor.:th_gives:

It has new tires, it's a 5 speed, and it doesn't smoke. It's a bit of a project for sure, but I got a pretty damn good deal. Everyone on the east coast can pick up a cheap Saab anytime; it's next to impossible to find a Saab, let alone a cheap 9k in Colorado very often.

Nice score! I hadn't even seen that up on Craigslist and I've been browsing through it the past few days. I do love the classic 9000 Turbo's, I've had both a '91 and a '92 and my '92 was the same color, Platana Gray. I just did a water pump on my Aero yesterday and today I just finished stripping my grill about 2 minutes ago and I'm about to go plastidip it black. As for the low beam issue it's probably a relay, let me know if you need one as I have several.
