OK guys, I recently had a massive oil leak, and would not
have guessed the root cause.
I was leaking 1 quart every 2 days which is 300 miles,
as I do 150 miles a day at 65-70MPH commute speed.

Last month I changed my timing chain, and no it was not
the cover. I cleaned the engine, and everything was clean.

The oil was leaking from the TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER.
i HAD FORGOTTEN or lost and forgot TO RE-INSTALL THE TENSIONER OIL SEAL

Anyway, what is a small leak at idle, is a large leak at 3,000rpm and 50LBS oil
pressure. Yes, the oil tensioner is under oil pressure (remember the oil passage way) and it gushed out.

Solution, keep cleaning and eventually where the oil is is where the leak is, Duh!!!

Solution, pay $18 at the local SAAB dealer, and it stopped. Could have paid
$5 on the internet, but I wanted this over with.

Good that you found it! My 81 turbo's oil leakage is almost certainly from worn piston rings so it's an engine-out jobby. The engine runs very well otherwise and I am putting a litre of oil into it say once maybe twice a week if I drive the car a lot.

Given that I'm cut off by flooding since two days ago and won't get out until at least the weekend means the car is going nowhere. Too wet to go outside and do any work on other aspects though (like fixing the bent RHS foglight that collected something on the off-road track up the house late yesterday arvo).

Craig.
