Low compression Budget Engine rebuild

I was looking for some feedback and comments on the engine rebuild I'm planning. Its been a while since I posted anything, sorry to be a stranger.
Here's the Low Down.
I did a little damage to my t16. Leaned out #1 and melted some of the pistion, but what did the piston in was a huge crack in the grove for the oil scraper rings, that also split a ring land in half. Cylinder #2 has some deep ass scours in the wall, can you say BLOW BY. COmp test before Diss was #1 50psi #2 135psi, #3,#4 185-190. Still went like hell.
Upon inspection theres no way I'm going to able to use my block unless I bore the shit out of it. All other non wear parts are in fine shape.
There's no way in hell i'm going to pay $100 a piece for a stock replacment piston w/rings. 9.0 comp. I can get some Forged pistons for the same price. Or some Hyper's probly the best choice and w/ a 8.5comp ratio.
To save some money I could get some slugs for $15.50 EACH. yES THATS WHAT i SAID. I stumbled across a shop that has early 8Valve turbo pistons W/rings for this unbelievable price. They are 7.2 comp. ratio, and I have to get 1.00mm 2nd oversize slugs only. Standard AB bore pistons are $100.

So here's what I think I will do. For less the a set of new rings, I'll get a set of pistons w/rings. New bearings, thrusts washers, gaskets and seals, timing chain, etc. Have block bored out .040" over. Balance rods, possible polish and piston squirters. Now I was going to go with a fresh ported 2.1 head, but have been thinking about scouring some yards for a t-5 head, and do a little timing cover fab. To compensate for the low comp ratio I'll just turn up the boost. For the fueling problems megasquirt me, and my new secret weapon,Velocity Stacks.

I guess this combo should get me rolling again, comment's.

Oh shit.. your back? Man its been a long time!

early 8v turbo pistons with 7.2 compression ratio - sounds like the B engine to me. Do those work in an H engine?

As an aside, I have a B engine turbo which needs to be bored, and I need to get some oversize pistons. What is the name of this shop and do they have another set of four?

sounds like fun, i think thats my basic plan for the engine im gonna build up for the 99t. b motor pistons (as far as i know they should work) with a T5 head (should make for a CR in the high 6:1 range ) and some ARP head studs i got way long ago from nick and still havent used. that should be plenty of power, then i might need an 18t upgrade for my tdo4 though

Just to let you know the only t-5 head that will bolt up to a b201 or b202 block is the 93 aero(with t5, sort of) head, but then its the exact same as a 2.1 head. The t5 heads off the 94 up 9000 are slightly shorter and take a fair amount of work to adapt to the 2.0 c900 engine. It is possible and I know of people who have done this and if you want I know of a very good shop that has done this. They are better heads than the 2.0 or the 2.1, but unbless youre going for absolute, eat transmissions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner power its a little on the unreasonable side, but Im all for the unreasonable and insane so I say if thats what you want, go for it.

yeah basically thats my plan, so far ive been pretty damn good at it

and yeah, the 93 head is actually the exact same head as the 2.1l n/a head, and from what ive seen the mods to make the T5 head are pretty simple, especially if you dont need to make the power steering or a/c work, wich i wont need to do in the ol 99.

i allready have the T5 head, and basically what is needed is an extra piece of aluminum on the timing chain cover so that oil doesnt go flying out of the engine in that area  i know its not "easy" but ive seen the mods neccisary, and i know what im getting into.

If you add metal to the cover plate, good luck on getting it planed so that it seals to the top of the block. WHat Ive seen done is metal being added to the end of the head and then planed down so that it is on the same plain as the mating surface of the head, then bolted to the block and then have that surfaced. If you add to the cover then there would be 2 wierd 90 degree angles that wouldnt have tension in the downward direction. That would make for some interesting issues with getting it to stop leaking oil. Also I seem to remember that the motor mount on the head doesnt line up and needs to be fabricated, so more welding to the head. Good luck.

I'm not worry about making the Head fit, I have Tig weldor, piles of scrap aluminum, and for $50 a head at the yard, I can try a couple times. c900's don't have any motor mount mounting on the head that I know of. I've never had A/C, and I'll make the power steering fit ,even if I need to make a new mounting bracket for it.

Burns:I'll send you a PM about that block, I've been hesitant about getting a used block, but I'd like to see what you got.

Gregabbot:I'll PM you the web site for shop selling those pistons, I don't want everybody knowing and buying up the Pistions I need.

i hope both you and paul take good pictures of what is needed to be done. when my head gasket eventually gets sent to pasture i am very interested in doing this, and seeing as i have no a/c too i would imagine the modifications could be minimal. good luck on the rebuild, and i cant wait to see this when its all done and screaming for boost:)

I thought my Head Gasket might be the couplret to my engine woes, but after 13,000 miles with 15-20psi boost level, the gasket looked like the day I installed it. It looked so good you could almost reuse it.

I would agree with PaulH that head Studs are the way to go, expensive, but worth every penny.

Hey 90SPG, My Saab will make it back down that way someday, My Pops lives in Mountville , outside of Lancaster, so when shes done I'll cruise down there, and then over to Philly to see the rest of the Guys.

I have Factory Shop manuels for both H-B,and 16v motors the overall dimensions of Pistons are as follows

Dimensions are for standard (AB) bore.

79-80=89.980-89.986
81-82=89.970-89.978 (turbo motors-1982/=89.976-89.976 this might be a misprint?)
84 and up=89.988-89.996

it seems that the piston clearance is tighter on 84 and up motors 0.01-0.04mm compared to 0.02-0.05mm for -82 motors.

pretty much the manuel says only difference is the size of the dish in the piston.

Comp ratios for 79-80 cars is 9.2
81- 9.5
turbo 79-82 7.2
turbo W/APC 82- 8.5
turbo 16 9.0
MAybe this will clear up a few things.?
