Looking at 1993 9000 Aero

Hey All,

Interested in a '93 Aero that is for sale in my area.

Seller says there is a small oil leak coming from the valve cover and will need to have the throttle body rebuilt. Has an air intake and exhaust system on it and it runs and drives fine. Has some dents on the exterior. Some pictures are below and it does not come with the wheels (will come with CSE's). Waiting on pics of the interior and engine bay right now.

My questions:
  • What are your thoughts on the 1993 aero model?
  • Can someone send me a link to a throttle body rebuild?
  • Anything I should look out for if I go take a look at the vehicle?
  • What do you think from the pics?
  • Anybody seen this specific car before on here or other forums?
  • Your thoughts on a price for this condition?

Nice colour looks in good condition

you've gotta bear in mind that its T5.2 software and is harder to map than T5.5

other than that they have 408cc injectors:respect:

and i would get rid of the TCS if it has it

but looks like a good car

I'd say one of the most important things to look at would be the rear suspension, where the strut travels through to the support. Look up above the rear tires where the shock goes through. Lots of them had rust problems and if that rusts, it's a real PITA to repair. I've seen several get junked because of that. Also A-Pillars. Look for rust around the windshield. If it's TCS, there won't be a throttle cable on the throttle body - as it's a 'drive by wire' system. (electronic) My '93 TCS has always been, and continues to be flawless. *knock on wood*
Mike D has a great write-up on "how to remove TCS from a 9000."

I remember seeing that car on CL. Looks nice! Price?? I'd say somewhere around $2500 - $3000.
Good luck!

TCS cars still have a throttle cable!

all 1993s have TCS,, and dont be afraid of t5.2,, once you know it its no harder to deal with than later cars

the manual transmissions dont have drainplugs, so odds are it has the origanl trans fluid in there,, you can make a drain plug for it, you just need to know where to drill a hole in your gearbox.

also, check for rust around where the rear shocks bolt to the body ( sometimes you need to pull interior panels down) its the first spot to see issues !

$2500-$3000 without issues. Even $800 is a gamble not knowing what's wrong.
Unfortunately... Find a friend with a TCS throttle body and try swapping it before you buy it. See if that fixes it. I know a guy with a couple for sale if you're interested, PM me.

- All '93 Aeros have TCS.
- '93 is the first year of Trionic engine management. Trionic 5.2 aka "T5.2"
- I can't think of any good reason to upgrade to T5.5
- '93 is the first year of the newer body style, yet the engines and transmissions are similar to those used in '91-'92
- Ultima (in Ray's link above) is the best place to get a rebuilt throttle body

It's safe to assume that the car has problems with the Electronic Throttle System -- the critical hardware of the Traction Control System. Often, the throttle body is the issue, but there's no guarantee that a replacement will totally cure the problem. There may also be problems with other components in the system (the ETS ECU, the gas pedal potentiometer, etc) which can be pricey.

Note: when installing the new throttle body, it should be calibrated using a Tech2.

It is possible to remove ETS/TCS from this car. I started a thread with some details, but I no longer own that car.

Bottom line. $800 is a fair price, assuming there are no rust/collision issues. DO NOT buy this car with the intent to use it as a daily driver any time soon. DO NOT buy this car if you don't have the time/talent/tools/interest, and a place to work on it. DO NOT buy this car if you don't have at least an additional $1500 to put into it.

The car is beautiful, but a '93 Aero (or CSE) is probably the worst way to start with 9000s. That said, this is a cheap way to get into an Aero. If you decide to buy it, we'll be here to help you through. :)

Make sure you budget for some new wheels, too. CSE wheels are fugly. :th_thumbsdownsmiley

You need access to someone with Tech 2 ISAT device to do a proper trouble shooting on the TCS, unless it is something simple which it might be. Do not buy unless you know who can use the early Tech2.

That said I've run a 1993 Aero from nearly new, TCS is more work to keep running but calibrated correctly w/ an on/off switch gets my 300hp down very nicely.

Go for it if you can find help as above, then start hoarding spare parts; TCS TB, TCS ECU brain, gearboxes.

Probably not. I wouldn't.

LHM usually sucks really really bad in my experience. Others claim to be able to drive through it, so the severity seems to vary from car-to-car.

Ask the seller how poorly it drives.

If you do decide to drive it, make sure you're fully legit - licensed, insured, etc.

As an added bonus I believe I have a non-tcs throttle body and IAC valve already in my possession (as well as the hoses i think). So I could try and resolve the issue and if worst comes to worst just start picking up the rest of the bits needed to switch and then do that.

Well, I think I have decided against the 1993 TCS nightmare that this car sounds like it would turn in to. Due to my 900 already being a 100% project car (and my dd) it probably isn't a good idea to get into a second project. There are plenty of 9000's out here though so I suppose I will save up a month or two and purchase a bit nicer one without the headaches.

Thanks for the input everyone and hopefully you will see my 'new 9000' thread in the near future!

Edit; I read through the thread so I'm up to date now.

I've met the owner and driven this car. First thoughts about the car is it was in full running order when I drove it but it does indeed have a TCS/Electronic Throttle Body which can go into Limp Home mode. But it currently at the time was not, however things have changed since then. I was told that when he did the clutch job that he forgot to hook up a ground connection which he thought was related in setting it in LH mode but now he says it needs a rebuilt throttle body. It shifted smooth and appeared to have a new clutch job as the owner stated so no complaints there, I also don't remember any scratchy/weak synchros as far as the tranny went. The seats were a little dried out and flattened for it's age in the interior so it wasn't in excellent condition but not horrible either. The exterior did have some dings here and there but overall not too bad considering it's 93', but at the same time I would consider it to be in a somewhat rough condition overall both interior and exterior when compared to other cars I've owned/seen. Only thing that really stood out to me which could be suspension related is the car would creak when going over angles or bumps. If it's worth it to you and you're willing to convert it then I say go for it. But like everyone else has stated it will have LH mode issues and be an effort to try to drive that far with it in LH mode. If you're just looking for a cheap car that you can work/build on and might not be the prettiest, then that might be it. If you want a Aero that you won't have to do so much work for you're better off getting a 94', 96' (believe there were both TCS and Non TCS this year), or a 97'. If you can afford to spend the money then here's some better options for an Aero.

Here's all the Aero's currently in the area;

Eucalyptus Green 1994 has a 3" exhaust $3,500

Imola Red 1994 $3,800

Black 1995 (probably TCS) with salvage title? $2,000

Black 1995 (this is also a TCS Aero) $4,900
