So yeah, 12 weeks ago my company was cut in half. I guess we were trailblazers compared to my friends.

I got a text from a friend I graduated with.

He is at Little Tikes/MGA entertainment. They let go of 75 people in Ohio and LA. He is good though.

Our mutual friend, another class of 04' alumni. He and one other designer at MHT wheels in Cali, let go. He was the head of design.

I am sure there are countless Alum's at Ford/GM/Chrysler being let go as we speak too.

My bro in low at GSK, 800 people worldwide were let go. He was kept, but the promotion he was promised since day one, his boss leaving, yeah instead of filling the position they are closing it down perminantly. Still better than being let go.

Everywhere I look I am hearing stories like this.

What about you guys?

Thankfully computer problems don't go away when the economy tanks, and the monolithic corporation I work for is still raking in the dough with billions sitting in the bank.

I don't personally know anyone who has lost their job yet, but I'm sure it won't be long at this rate.

I have friends facing the axe, but mainly because of the Petters Group fraud shit. Their company just got bought up right before the shit hit the fan.

Not fun.

My wife's hospital is cutting full-time staff, hopefully Jen is not one of them. She does not know yet, but they are already short on nurses...so we'll just pray she doesn't get the pink slip.

I really don't know whats happening to my dads position at Delphi and with the extension that he got he will pass the legal length that Delphi is required to hold his position for. So my dad got a one year extension with the Navy past his retirment date and is still up for one more year, waiting to hear from those in charge of personel. Now if he makes captain then he is in for longer as his retirment date would be reset and he would need to stay in for so long to be vested in the captain retirement level.

I don't think I will have any problems with this. Ultimately, as it's already happening people will have less money in general so I will have less sales but since I bought to far under my means even if I made 1/2 as much money as I do I would still be able to make it in the end. Ramen noodles are an A-1 financial disaster food, as long as you can heat water on an open fire you got food. I am stocking up now.

Our biggest competitor just let go of a large portion of their staff, but that's because we've stolen so much business from them.

I'm sitting pretty, being somewhat high on the ladder now. Managed to get my good friend an interview today, and am pretty sure the job will be offered to him.

I face a different kind of issue.

Vermont hates IBM, and IBM hates Vermont.
New York loves IBM, and IBM loves New York.

Being in Vermont, I'm sure I'll either face the eventual layoff, or offer to transfer to East Fishkill.

That being said, we've laid off 2,900 employees since 2001.

My friend just got laid off.

She is 4 motnths pregnant, and owns a small business as well.

The reason she got laid off was due to her company being bought by another company, that was then caught in a 3 billion dollar scam, over 11 years.

Politicians are re-donating all of the contributions from the former owner of the company (now in jail) to save face, and she is stuck without insurance, and without a job.

The former owner also has lost 10 million dollars in vegas.

It makes me sick.

I'm fine though.

People are not likley to use bikes LESS, given the situation we are in.

Yeah, that.

Let me re-iterate. I, MYSELF am fine. I am keeping this place running by doing the work of people who are gone or people above me so that they can take time off. It sounds self agrandizing, but if I was fired, the company would have to close its doors. And in this economy, I am still getting hits based on my portfolio and resume from good companies when others cannot even get a callback. So I am pretty ok.

But, lots of stories of people around me, my wife's coworkers-their husbands and friends. Things like that, I am hearing all over the place. Its a lot of doom and gloom.

two guys at the company i work for got the boot, but that's because there was evidence of marijuana usage on the job in the work truck they used. so different situation.
right now i install spray booths for collision shops and as the industry will be switching to waterborne paints in NYS very soon, many shops need to either replace their old booths, or retrofit advance cure systems in their old booths to accommodate the needed airflow to dry the paints. i'm not really worried about much as of yet.

I'm fine for now. I just got promoted. The only people getting walked are the people who have no reason to be there in the first place. We are moving operations for two of our phone sites and just opened a new location. With the way the market is currently and the business it drives, there are some people working 16-hour days. I am one of them. I'm working for two divisions at once right now. A few of us are running the Cadaver Derby, taking bets on who is going to stroke out first. A few months ago someone fell asleep at the wheel and died on her way home so it's in really poor taste, but I have the feeling it's going to get really common around these parts...

My company filed for bankruptcy a little less than a year ago, but I'm not terrible worried. We are more like two different companies. After we were bought out years ago, our parent company basically left us as is. Now the new CEO is trying to merge us into one big company, and thankfully they seem to like our head office and data center more than their own.

So your bro is at GSK where???

I have the opposite issue, being an exec, I have a golden parachute but they don;t like to have you pull the cord, so they make you miserable until you leave for the proverbial "personal reasons"

So we laid off a buncha people ( my whole new department actually in April, now I have no staff collect a huge paycheck and spend all my time doing executive scutwork...

Shouldn't complain I know but its kinda tough to find a job that makes the right $$$ and options and all ... been looking for a while

If I got laid off the parachute is pulled plus some so I can stay and wait for my options to be worth something or move on...

I am fine here. Farming is OK for now. Input costs have gone up by some 3-400%..... but ok for now.

2 In-Laws have been laid off, both in the housing industry.

OK i would like to ask a question.

When these people get laid off/fired .

Do they say the can't find work because

A. They can't find a job that is the same or better than there old one I.e. not willing to go backwards

or
B. They can't find A job

I find alot times B is the answer . You know sometimes life sucks and you have to work 2 jobs until a good one comes along
