Jury Duty

So today was my first day of jury duty and let me tell you it sucks.

I have no idea how it works in other municipalities or states but in Minneapolis you sit in a windowless basement room for about 9 hours, it is so brutal.

Orientation was not only insulting as the clerks speak to you in the tone of voice a special needs teacher talks to a child with downs syndrome, but people kept asking the same dumbass questions over and over again.

After 4.5 hours of sitting around I was sent to a prospective juror pool, I am so bored at this point I actually want to get on a jury.

It turns out I know the judge, he is friend of my family from about 10 years back when he was a defense attorney in private practice, so I got excluded from that one.

A few more hours pass, I am selected to for another jury pool, not the jury pool with the 4 hot chicks. Noooooo I am sitting next to a lady with a mustache who smells alot like cabbage.

The selection is still pending so I cannot go in to detail yet, but I assure you after my exchange with the Judge, prosecutor and defense attorney (trifecta) during the questioning phase, I will be excused from this one too.

Only 13 days of sitting on my ass for 9 hours a day to go!

I know it's a pain in the ass, but we have to have jurors in order to try cases. And a juror with a brain is truly a ray of hope.

I once tried an employment law case to a jury of eight, consisting of one guy with an technical degree, one woman with a B.A., four people with "some" college, and two people with an eighth grade education. Try walking your way around the Americans with Disabilities Act with a group like that.

Sounds like an "average American"

1 in 4 Americans has a college degree.

Isn't a jury pool supposed to be "average?"

The discussion I got into was when several people when asked about the accused guilt or innocence they replied with answers like "well the trial hasn't started yet, I don't know if he is guilty or not guilty"

It was my understanding that the accused is not guilty until proven otherwise, and seeing as how the trial has not even begun, it would stand that the accused is considered not guilty regardless of whether the trial was underway or not.

I would think (could be wrong) that he is not guilty until the closing arguments conclude and the jury deliberates and returns with a verdict.

Furthermore, wouldn't the defendant be considered not guilty up until a verdict of guilty is handed back? (provided it was a guilty verdict)

I was simply amazed by the general level of stupidity displayed by the general populace.

I do hate everyone.

But I hate everyone equally.

I dread the day I will be called for Jury duty. I simply don't have time for it.
My plan is to either claim I've been a victim of the questioned crime or pretend to be racist. One of the two should get me off.

I got out of it last year..cause I was in MD when the thing took place back home in NJ.

After taking alot of upper level law stuff, I kinda do feel like I owe it to myself and others to participate in jury duty. Afterall, if someone was really innocent, wouldnt you want to be a part of helping them? or vice versa?

is there no justice in the world? cmon guys

I'd dig being sequestered, but the fantasy doesn't usually involved 11 other people (generally sweaty and middle aged) and a murdered guy or gal.

But it does remind me of this porno I've been writing. It's called Hung Jury, but that's just a working title.

I've been called twice. The first time was in school, so I just said, "Well, I'm actually in Louisiana" and they let me go. The second time, I did something clever - you can defer up to three months away from the date they give you (it's one day every couple years for a petit juror summons), but the catch is it has to be on the same day of the week. Mine was a Thursday, so I changed it to Thursday, July 3 - the day before a federal holiday - knowing that there would probably not be any trials started that day. I was right, and they let most of us go at 10:30 AM.

i've been called once, but was in CO. If i ever get on a case like some frivolous shit that some assholes do, like someone suing McDonalds because they got burned by the coffee, you can be sure that no one will be walking out with more money than they came came in with, except the jurors (although, in pittsburgh, you get $10 a day, and parking is 12... way to go..)

Excused from 2 juries today, this shit is getting old.

The boredom is truly excruciating.

Also, while wondering through the skyway system on my lunch break I sort of ran to an ex-girlfriend.

She works in a salon, we made eye contact, while I am no lip reader, I am pretty as she was pointing me out to coworkers the words, "thats the asshole who stole my cat" were uttered.

i had jury duty for 3 weeks straight once. everyone in the jury was pretty cool except one dude who was so annoying, he was like 5 annoying people rolled into one. but whenever i was able to ignore him, i enjoyed talking with everyone else b/c they came from all walks of life and some were doing some awesome stuff with their time. i got yelled at by the judge twice though - once for chewing gum, and once for laughing at the plaintiff's attorney. don't do either or you will be publicly scolded.
